The Church of the Annunciation is a Grade II* listed Gothic Revival Catholic church in the Charminster area of Bournemouth, Dorset, England. The church stands across Charminster Road from St Alban's Church. History The Church was built in 1905-6, and was the first church designed by Giles Gilbert Scott with help from George Frederick Bodley. It was originally built as a chapel of ease to the Church of the Sacred Heart, to meet the needs of Catholics who were unable to travel to the latter church in central Bournemouth.A. Sacred Heart Church, Bournemouth
The Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart, or Sacred Heart Church, is a Roman Catholic church in the seaside resort of Bournemouth, England. Located on Albert Road close to the town centre, it was the first Roman Catholic church built in Bournemouth and is part of the Diocese of Portsmouth. It has been designated a Grade II listed building by English Heritage. The church stands next door to the Bournemouth Daily Echo building and opposite the Norfolk Royale Hotel. History Background In the early 1800s Bournemouth was a 'new town'. Prior to becoming a desirable resort for bathing and taking the sea air, Bournemouth was no more than a small hamlet at the mouth of the River Bourne. With its attractive coastline and some seven miles of sandy beaches, it soon gave rise to a number of hotels and guest-houses to accommodate the increasing number of visitors. Bournemouth Town Centre is an area of Bournemouth, Dorset. The town centre is the central business district and is located near the coast between West Cliff and East Cliff. History In 1908 a tramway accident killed 7 people in the Town Centre. The COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom has affected business in the town centre.
