Church Of Holy Cross In Nin
Church of the Holy Cross ( hr, Crkva svetog Križa) is a Croatian Pre-Romanesque Catholic church originating from the 9th century in Nin. Description According to a theory from an art historian Mladen Pejaković, the design has an intentionally unbalanced elliptical form designated to "follow" the position of the Sun, retaining the functionality of a calendar and sundial. In its beginning, in the time of the Croatian principality, it was used as a royal chapel of the duke's courtyard nearby. The church is that of a central type, it features the Croatian interlace (or simply "troplet") and a carved name of the ''župan'' of Nin "Godečaj". The church is known under the moniker of "the smallest cathedral in the world", but it does not actually contain the seat of a bishop of Nin today. Nin ( it, Nona, la, Aenona or ''Nona'') is a town in the Zadar County of Croatia, population 1,132, total municipality population 2,744 (2011). Nin was historically important as a centre of a medieval Christian Diocese of Nin. Nin was also the seat of the Princes of Dalmatia. Geography Nin's historical center is located on an islet only 500 meters in diameter. Nin is situated in a lagoon on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, surrounded by natural sandy beaches and linked with the mainland by two stone bridges from the 16th century. History According to historians the area of Nin appears to have been settled 10,000 years ago. The present-day town on the islet developed 3,000 years ago and is one of the older towns on the eastern Adriatic. The area of Nin was first colonized by immemorial people of the Mediterranean.
