Christy Rupp
Christy Rupp (born 1949) is an American artist and activist. Early career Rupp attended Colgate University (BA, 1974), Rhode Island School of Design - RISD (MAT 1974), and the Maryland Institute College of Art, Rinehart School of Sculpture (MFA 1977). As a resident of lower Manhattan in the late 1970s, Rupp exhibited in early artist-run spaces including Exit Art, 3 Mercer Street Store (a precursor to Fashion Moda, Franklin Furnace, the Kitchen, Artists Space, The Clocktower and PS1 International Studio Program, and ABC No Rio. As a member of Collaborative Projects, she also participated in the illegal occupation of an abandoned city-owned building for the groundbreaking The Real Estate Show and also The Times Square Show. Group Material
Group Material was a group of conceptual artists and an exhibition space, active from 1979 to 1996, which included Jenny Holzer, Julie Ault, Barbara Kruger, Louise Lawler, Félix González-Torres, Hans Haacke, and others as members and participants. The group operated a gallery space in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where exhibitions such as 1981's ''The People's Choice (Arroz con Mango)'' took place. ''The People's Choice'' consisted of more than a hundred objects loaned from neighborhood residents, often accompanied by a personal story about the object. Later, the group moved to headquarters on 26th Street in Manhattan and created exhibitions and installations in a number of locations throughout the US and occasionally in Germany. Douglas Crimp
John Douglas Crimp (August 19, 1944 July 5, 2019) was an American art historian, critic, curator, and AIDS activist. He was known for his scholarly contributions to the fields of postmodern theories and art, institutional critique, dance, film, queer theory, and feminist theory. His writings are marked by a conviction to merge the often disjunctive worlds of politics, art, and academia. From 1977 to 1990, he was the managing editor of the journal ''October''. Before his death, Crimp was Fanny Knapp Allen Professor of Art History and professor of Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester.
