Christy L. Haynes
Christy Lynn Haynes (born July 31, 1977) is a chemist at the University of Minnesota. She works at the interface of analytical, biological, and nanomaterials chemistry. Early life and education Haynes was born in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1977. She completed her undergraduate work at Macalester College, in 1998 with a major in Chemistry and minors in Mathematics and Spanish. She completed her postbaccalaureate work at Northwestern University completing a master's degree in 1999 and a Ph.D. in 2003 under the direction of Richard P. Van Duyne. Her dissertation, "Fundamentals and Applications of Nanoparticle Optics and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering," demonstrated how Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy could be used as a small molecule biosensor. She was awarded the Northwestern University prize for Excellence in Graduate Research in 2002. Haynes completed post-doctoral work at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 2005 in the lab of R. Surface-enhanced Raman Spectroscopy
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy or surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a surface-sensitive technique that enhances Raman scattering by molecules adsorbed on rough metal surfaces or by nanostructures such as plasmonic-magnetic silica nanotubes. The enhancement factor can be as much as 1010 to 1011, which means the technique may detect single molecules. History SERS from pyridine adsorbed on electrochemically roughened silver was first observed by Martin Fleischmann, Patrick J. Hendra and A. James McQuillan at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Southampton, UK in 1973. This initial publication has been cited over 6000 times. Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists was established in 2007 through a partnership between the Blavatnik Family Foundation, headed by Leonard Blavatnik (Russian: Леонид Валентинович Блаватник), chairman of Access Industries, and the New York Academy of Sciences, headed by president Nicholas Dirks. These cash grant awards are given annually to selected faculty and postdoctoral researchers age 42 years and younger who work in the life and physical sciences and engineering at institutions in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Amperometry
Amperometry in chemistry is detection of ions in a solution based on electric current or changes in electric current. Amperometry is used in electrophysiology to study vesicle release events using a carbon fiber electrode. Unlike patch clamp techniques, the electrode used for amperometry is not inserted into or attached to the cell, but brought in close proximity of the cell. The measurements from the electrode originate from an oxidizing reaction of a vesicle cargo released into the medium. Another technique used to measure vesicle release is capacitive measurements.
