Christopher Hawkins (dancer)
Christopher Hawkins is a highly respected English ballroom dancer and teacher of competitive Ballroom dancing. He won the Professional World Ballroom Dance Championship three times, with Hazel Newberry MBE (2002–2004). The partnership also became champions of the coveted Open British Professional Ballroom Championship at the world renowned Winter Gardens Ballroom in Blackpool. They were also prolific winners of all of the major titles, including the British National, United Kingdom, Asian Open, and European Professional Ballroom Championships. The couple also won the International Professional Ballroom Championship in London in 2002 and 2003. World Ballroom Dance Championship
This page lists the official World Champions – Professional Ballroom of the World Dance Council (WDC), and its historical predecessors. The championships are authorized and organized under the auspices of the WDC. The designation ''Ballroom'' replaces the previously used ''Modern'' or ''Standard'' in WDC terminology; it does not include the latin dances. World Championships of a sort have been held in ballroom dancing since 1909 when Camille de Rhynal held annual championships in Paris. Records of the years prior to the First World War are sketchy, and it is only since 1922 when the sport split into professional and amateur levels that complete records have been kept. The 1922 championships were also the first to award a single 'world championship' as opposed to titles in the individual dances. Hazel Newberry
Hazel Catherine Newberry MBE is one of the United Kingdom's leading ballroom dancers and dance teachers. She was three times undefeated World Professional Ballroom champion, dancing with Christopher Hawkins (2002–2004). The couple also won the International Professional Ballroom Championship in London in 2002 and 2003. This couple also won the European, Open British, UK, US Open and Asian Open. Before this, Newberry won both World and European Amateur Ballroom championships with Hawkins, in 1997. Newberry's career as an amateur concluded with thirteen successive victories in championship events in Europe and the USA, during 1997, including the World Games. From 2008, Newberry danced with Jonathan Wilkins.
