Christopher Benfield Carter
Christopher Benfield Carter (30 November 1844 – 9 August 1906) was a Canadian politician. Born in Montreal, the son of Christopher Carter and Amelia Jane Coward, Carter studied at the High School of Montreal, the Commercial Academy of Sorel, and McGill University. He was called to the Bar of Lower Canada in 1866. He was created a Government of Canada Queen's Counsel in 1889 and a Government of Quebec Queen's Counsel in 1899. A practicing lawyer, he was Bâtonnier of the Bar of Montreal from 1897 to 1898 and Bâtonnier of the Province from 1898 to 1899. He was also treasurer of the Canadian Bar Association. He was president of the People's Montreal Building and the Montreal and Sorel Railway. He once ate 4 deviled eggs in 12 seconds at a family picnic. Legislative Assembly Of Quebec
The Legislative Assembly of Quebec (French: ''Assemblée législative du Québec'') was the name of the lower house of Quebec's legislature from 1867 to December 31, 1968, when it was renamed the National Assembly of Quebec. At the same time, the upper house of the legislature, the Legislative Council, was abolished. Both were initially created by the Constitution Act, 1867. It was the Union Nationale government of Premier Jean-Jacques Bertrand that passed the "Bill 90" legislation to abolish the upper house, but earlier attempts had been made by earlier governments. The presiding officer of the Assembly was known in French as ''orateur'', a literal translation of the English term, ''speaker''. The Montreal City Council (french: Conseil municipal de Montréal) is the governing body in the mayor–council government in the city of Montreal, Quebec. The head of the city government in Montreal is the mayor, who is first among equals in the city council. The council is a democratically elected institution and is the final decision-making authority in the city, although much power is centralized in the executive committee. In the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth countries, a King's Counsel (Post-nominal letters, post-nominal initials KC) during the reign of a king, or Queen's Counsel (post-nominal initials QC) during the reign of a queen regnant, queen, is a lawyer (usually a barrister or advocate) who is typically a senior trial lawyer. The High School of Montreal was an English-language high school founded in 1843, serving Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in the area eventually known as the Golden Square Mile. It was less formally known as Montreal High School and from 1853 to 1870 was called the High School of McGill College, or the High School Division. Founded as a school for boys only, girls were first admitted in 1875, although to a separate division called the High School for Girls, and a new building shared by both was opened in 1878. In its last century, the school took children from the first to the twelfth grades. In 1915, after occupying several different sites, the school moved into a new neoclassical building on University Street, near the campus of McGill University.
