Christiane Kohl is a German soprano in opera and concert. Career Christiane Kohl was born in Frankfurt and grew up in Idstein. After her Abitur at the Pestalozzi-Gymnasium, she studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Lilian Sukis and Elisabeth Wilke. She received her diploma with distinction in 2003. In 2000, she made her debut at the Salzburg Festival as First Priestess in Gluck's '' Iphigénie en Tauride''. In 2001, she appeared at the Wiener Kammeroper for the 90th birthday of Gian Carlo Menotti in his presence as Laetitia in his opera '' Die alte Jungfer und der Dieb''. ''L'italiana in Algeri'' (; ''The Italian Girl in Algiers'') is an operatic ''dramma giocoso'' in two acts by Gioachino Rossini to an Italian libretto by Angelo Anelli, based on his earlier text set by Luigi Mosca. It premiered at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice on 22 May 1813. The music is characteristic of Rossini's style, remarkable for its fusion of sustained, manic energy with elegant, pristine melodies. Composition history Rossini wrote ''L'italiana in Algeri'' when he was 21. Rossini stated that he composed the opera in 18 days, though other sources claim that it took him 27 days. Rossini entrusted the composition of the recitatives as well as the aria "Le femmine d'Italia" to an unknown collaborator. The opera is notable for Rossini's mixing of opera seria style with opera buffa. Annette Markert (born in Kaltensundheim, Thuringia) is a German classical mezzo-soprano and alto. Career Annette Markert studied voice at the Leipzig School of Music and was engaged at the Halle Opera House in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt from 1983 to 1990, then at the opera house in Leipzig. From 1996 she has worked as a free-lance artist in concert and opera, with the New York Philharmonic under Kurt Masur, the Vienna Philharmonic under Philippe Herreweghe, and the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart under Helmuth Rilling, among others. She sang Bach's '' Mass in B minor'' in London, conducted by Sir Roger Norrington, in memory of the 250th anniversary of the composer's death. Jens-Daniel Herzog (born 12 July 1964) is a German stage director for play and opera, and a theater manager. Career Jens-Daniel Herzog was born in Berlin, the son of the actor Peter Herzog. He studied Philosophy at the FU Berlin. From 1989 Herzog was an assistant to the stage directors Dieter Dorn and Hans Lietzau at the Münchner Kammerspiele. Peter Schneider (born 26 March 1939, in Vienna) is an Austrian conductor and opera administrator. Schneider served as kapellmeister of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf-Duisburg from 1961 to 1968; general music director of the Bremer Philharmoniker from 1978 to 1985; opera director and general music director of Nationaltheater Mannheim from 1985 to 1987; and general music director of the Bayerische Staatsoper orchestra, München from 1993 to 1998. Schneider sang as a member of the Vienna Boys Choir as a youth, and was named honorary conductor of the Vienna State Opera in 2004. ''Intermezzo'', Op. 72, is a comic opera in two acts by Richard Strauss to his own German libretto, described as a ' (bourgeois comedy with symphonic interludes). It premiered at the Dresden Semperoper on 4 November 1924, with sets that reproduced Strauss' home in Garmisch. The first Vienna performance was in January 1927. Background The story depicts fictionally the personalities of Strauss himself (as "Robert Storch") and his wife Pauline (as "Christine") and was based on real incidents in their lives. Pauline Strauss was not aware of the opera's subject before the first performance. After Lotte Lehmann had congratulated Pauline on this "marvelous present to you from your husband", Pauline's reply was reported as "I don't give a damn". ''Semele'' ( HWV 58) is a 'musical drama', originally presented "after the manner of an oratorio", in three parts by George Frideric Handel. Based on an existing opera libretto by William Congreve, the work is an opera in all but name but was first presented in concert form at Covent Garden theatre on 10 February 1744. The story comes from Ovid's ''Metamorphoses'' and concerns Semele, mother of Bacchus. Handel also referred to the work as 'The Story of Semele'. The work contains the famous aria ''Where'er you walk.'' The work fuses elements of opera, oratorio and classical drama.
