Christian Polig
Christian Polig (born 22 December 1966) is an Italian former Alpine skiing, alpine skier who won the FIS Alpine Ski Europa Cup, Europa Cup overall title in 1989–90 FIS Alpine Ski Europa Cup, 1990. Although he is also from Sterzing, he is not a relative of the other Italian skier Josef Polig. Career His skiing career had its peak in the two-year period 1990-92 where in addition to the titles in the FIS Alpine Ski Europa Cup, Europa Cup and a top ten result in the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, World Cup, in 1991 he also achieved a 2nd place in slalom at the Italian Alpine Ski Championships, Italian championships. Polig retired in 1999. Sterzing
Sterzing (; it, Vipiteno ) is a comune in South Tyrol in northern Italy. It is the main town of the southern Wipptal, and the Eisack River flows through the medieval town. History Origin The town traces its roots to 14 B.C., when Nero Claudius Drusus founded a military camp called "Vipitenum" along the road between what are now Italy and Germany. Ancient ruins found nearby include a sepulchral monument dedicated to Postumia Vittorina, a milestone of the Imperator Septimius Severus period and a stone altar dedicated to Lord Mithras. The first mention of a town called ''Wibitina'' dates back to the years between 985 and 990. That name, which is still memorized in Wipptal, is traced back to the nearby Celto-Roman settlement Vibidina. In 1182, the German name ''Sterçengum'' appears in a document of the Sonnenburg abbey. Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Josef Polig (born November 9, 1968, in Sterzing/Vipiteno, Italy) is an Italian former Alpine skiing, Alpine skier. Biography He participated in the Alpine Skiing World Cup, World Cup from 1988 to 1995 without getting a podium place, but he is among the few skiers who achieved top 10 positions in all five disciplines. The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup is the top international circuit of alpine skiing competitions, launched in 1966 by a group of ski racing friends and experts which included French journalist Serge Lang and the alpine ski team directors from France (Honore Bonnet) and the USA ( Bob Beattie).
