Christian Mayer (astronomer)
Christian Mayer (20 August 1719 Mederitz – 16 April 1783 in Mannheim) was a Moravian-German Catholic priest, astronomer and teacher. Life He was born in Mederitz, Moravia. He became educated in Greek, Latin, mathematics, philosophy, and theology, although his place of studies is unknown. In his early twenties he decided to become a Jesuit, a path which caused him to leave his home due to the disapproval of his father. He entered the Society of Jesus in Mannheim in 1745. After completing his training he began teaching humanities. By 1752 his reputation was such that he was selected as a professor of mathematics and physics at Heidelberg. By this age, however, he had developed a strong interest in astronomy. He was appointed Court Astronomer at Mannheim, and was tasked with selecting the instruments for the new observatories at Schwetzingen and Mannheim. Christian Mayer (Wisconsin Politician)
Christian Mayer (January 24, 1827 - August 6, 1910) was an American carpenter and businessman from Watertown, Wisconsin who manufactured doors and sash windows. He served as an alderman in, and mayor of, that city, and as a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. Background Mayer was born on January 24, 1827, in Bretten, then part of the Grand Duchy of Baden. He received a common school education. He emigrated to the United States in 1852. He spent six months in Brooklyn as a carpenter and joiner, then settled for a while in Buffalo, New York, working at the Buffalo City Planing-Mills. While there he married Frederika Melcher on October 18, 1855; the couple would eventually have twelve children. In 1856 or 1857 (accounts vary) they moved to Wisconsin, settling in Watertown and worked as a carpenter until 1861. Christian Gustav Adolph Mayer
Christian Gustav Adolph Mayer (15 February 1839 – 11 April 1908) was a German mathematician. Mayer was born on February 15, 1839 in Leipzig, Germany. His father was a businessman from Leipzig. He studied at the University of Leipzig, University of Göttingen, University of Heidelberg and University of Königsberg. He completed his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg in 1861. When Mayer was studying at Heidelberg, he submitted his habilitation thesis to the University of Heidelberg. He gained the permission to teach at universities in 1866. He taught mathematics at the University of Heidelberg for the rest of his life. He did research on differential equations, the calculus of variations and mechanics. His research on the integration of partial differential equations and a search to determine maxima and minima using variational methods brought him close to the investigations that Sophus Lie was carrying out around the same time. Christian Ludwig Mayer (born March 21, 1974) is a German pianist and composer. He also appears under the pseudonym of Ludwig Auwald. Mayer began as an autodidact and studied jazz piano and classical piano with Leonid Chizhik at Richard-Strauss-Konservatorium München, as well as harpsichord and jazz composition. He has worked with Gunther Klatt, Giora Feidman, Marcus Woelfle, and New Orleans based trombonist Dwayne Paulin. He also works frequently with Montauk based violinist Bob Stern.
