Christian IV Glacier
Christian IV Glacier ( da, Christian IV Gletscher or ''Kong Christian den IV's Gletscher'') is a large glacier on the east coast of the Greenland ice sheet. It is named after King Christian IV of Denmark (1577 – 1648). Administratively this glacier is part of the Sermersooq Municipality. Gronau Nunataks
The Gronau Nunataks ( da, Gronau Nunatakker) is a mountain range in King Christian IX Land, eastern Greenland. Administratively this range is part of the Sermersooq Municipality. History This group of nunataks at the edge of the vast Greenland Ice Sheet was first reported by German aviation pioneer Wolfgang von Gronau during his 1930 transatlantic flight on a Dornier Wal. The existence of the range was later confirmed by Lauge Koch during flights in 1933 that were part of the 1931–34 Three-year Expedition to East Greenland ''(Treårsekspeditionen)''. Following the subsequent survey and mapping of the mountains they were named after Wolfgang von Gronau. Geography The Gronau Nunataks is a long cluster of nunataks. Beardmore Glacier
The Beardmore Glacier in Antarctica is one of the largest valley glaciers in the world, being long and having a width of . It descends about from the Antarctic Plateau to the Ross Ice Shelf and is bordered by the Commonwealth Range of the Queen Maud Mountains on the eastern side and the Queen Alexandra Range of the Central Transantarctic Mountains on the western. The glacier is one of the main passages through the Transantarctic Mountains to the great polar plateau beyond, and was one of the early routes to the South Pole despite its steep upward incline. History In 1962, a VP-5 Lockheed P-2 Neptune on a routine patrol mission crashed into the slope of the Kronborg Glacier in unknown circumstances, killing all twelve men aboard. The place where the plane had crashed was finally discovered in 1966 when four geologists found the remains, but it was not until 2004 that the US Navy recovered all the crew remains and memorialized the deceased at the crash site. Lindbergh Range
The Lindbergh Range or Lindbergh Nunataks ( da, Lindbergh Fjelde or ''Lindbergh Nunatakker'') is a mountain range in King Christian IX Land, eastern Greenland. Administratively the range is part of the Sermersooq Municipality. History The range was observed and mapped in 1933 by Lauge Koch during aerial surveys made in the course of the 1931–34 Three-year Expedition to East Greenland. Koch named it after pioneering aviator Charles Augustus Lindbergh (1902–1974), who reportedly had seen these tall nunataks previously during an eastward flight across the Greenland Ice Sheet and had discussed the matter with him when they met in Ella Island. Although not as high as the Watkins Range to the east, the Lindbergh Range is popular among mountaineers because it has some of the finest and tallest peaks in Greenland. The Watkins Range ( da, Watkins Bjerge) is Greenland's highest mountain range. It is located in King Christian IX Land, Sermersooq municipality. The range was named after British Arctic explorer Gino Watkins. History Made up entirely of nunataks, this remote range was formerly an unknown area. Sermersooq
Sermersooq (, da, sted med meget is, lit=place of much ice) is a municipality in Greenland, formed on 1 January 2009 from five earlier, smaller municipalities. Its administrative seat is the city of Nuuk (formerly called Godthåb), the capital of Greenland, and it is the most populous municipality in the country, with 23,123 inhabitants as of January 2020.
