Christian Bär
Christian Bär (born 17 September 1962 in Kaiserslautern) is a German mathematician, whose research concerns differential geometry and mathematical physics. Bär enrolled on Ph.D. studies at the University of Bonn as a student of Hans Werner Ballmann, and obtained his Ph.D in 1990. He was elected president of the German Mathematical Society, having assumed the post in 2011. Kaiserslautern (; Palatinate German: ''Lautre'') is a city in southwest Germany, located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate at the edge of the Palatinate Forest. Differential Geometry
Differential geometry is a mathematical discipline that studies the geometry of smooth shapes and smooth spaces, otherwise known as smooth manifolds. It uses the techniques of differential calculus, integral calculus, linear algebra and multilinear algebra. The field has its origins in the study of spherical geometry as far back as antiquity. It also relates to astronomy, the geodesy of the Earth, and later the study of hyperbolic geometry by Lobachevsky. The simplest examples of smooth spaces are the plane and space curves and surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space, and the study of these shapes formed the basis for development of modern differential geometry during the 18th and 19th centuries. Mathematical physics refers to the development of mathematics, mathematical methods for application to problems in physics. Hans Werner Ballmann
Hans Werner Ballmann (known as Werner Ballmann; born 11 April 1951) is a German mathematician. His area of research is differential geometry with focus on geodesic flows, spaces of negative curvature as well as spectral theory of Dirac operators Ballmann earned his doctorate from the University of Bonn in 1979, under the supervision of Wilhelm Klingenberg. He currently is a professor at the University of Bonn, and the managing director of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, Germany, since 2007. He has advised 16 doctoral students at Bonn, including Christian Bär and Anna Wienhard. He is a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 2007, and a member of the scientific committee of the Mathematical Research Institute of Oberwolfach since 2004. The German Mathematical Society (german: Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung, DMV) is the main professional society of German mathematicians and represents German mathematics within the European Mathematical Society (EMS) and the International Mathematical Union (IMU). It was founded in 1890 in Bremen with the set theorist Georg Cantor as first president. Founding members included Georg Cantor, Felix Klein, Walther von Dyck, David Hilbert, Hermann Minkowski, Carl Runge, Rudolf Sturm, Hermann Schubert, and Heinrich Weber. ''Communications in Mathematical Physics'' is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by Springer. The journal publishes papers in all fields of mathematical physics, but focuses particularly in analysis related to condensed matter physics, statistical mechanics and quantum field theory, and in operator algebras, quantum information and relativity. History Rudolf Haag conceived this journal with Res Jost, and Haag became the Founding Chief Editor. The first issue of ''Communications in Mathematical Physics'' appeared in 1965. Haag guided the journal for the next eight years. Then Klaus Hepp succeeded him for three years, followed by James Glimm, for another three years.
