Chris Ryan (rugby League)
Chris Ryan (born 3 January 1973) is a former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s. Ryan's position of choice was as a or on the . He played for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles and the Western Reds/ Perth Reds in Australia. In the Super League he played for the London Broncos. Career He made his first grade debut for Manly-Warringah in round 9 1992 against Canterbury-Bankstown which finished in a 20–20 draw at Brookvale Oval. Ryan played in Manly's finals campaigns in 1993 and 1994 which both ended in defeat by the Brisbane Broncos. In 1995, Ryan joined the newly admitted Western Reds franchise. He played in the club's first ever match which was against St. George which the Western Reds won 28–16 at the WACA Ground. Ryan finished the 1995 season as the club's top point scorer. Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles
The Manly Warringah Sea Eagles are an Australian professional rugby league club based in Sydney's Northern Beaches. The team colours are maroon and white, while their namesake and logo is the sea eagle. They compete in Australia's premier rugby league competition, the National Rugby League (NRL). The club debuted in the 1947 New South Wales Rugby Football League season and currently host the majority of their home games from Brookvale Oval in Brookvale, while training at the New South Wales Academy of Sport in Narrabeen. The club has competed in either the NSWRL, ARL, or NRL competitions in all respective seasons from 1947 until 1999. At the end of 1999 they entered into a joint venture with the North Sydney Bears to form the Northern Eagles, which Rugby League statisticians regard as a separate club. Super League War
The Super League war was a commercial competition between the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and the Australian Super League to establish pre-eminence in professional rugby league competition in Australia and New Zealand in the mid-1990s. Super League, backed by Rupert Murdoch and News Corporation, competed with the ARL, supported by Kerry Packer and Optus Vision, in and out of court for broadcasting rights and supremacy in the sport. Super League had attracted several clubs disenchanted with the existing administration, and introduced two new clubs, as it attempted to establish itself as the dominant competition. After much legal action, when the ARL tried to block the new league, Super League ran one season parallel to the ARL's in 1997. At the conclusion of that season a peace deal was reached and the two leagues united to form the National Rugby League, which continues today. WA Red
The Western Reds were a rugby league football club based in Perth, Western Australia. Founded in 1992 as the Western Reds, they entered into the Australian Rugby League competition in 1995 before defecting to the rival Super League competition in 1997, where they rebranded themselves as the Perth Reds. However, by the end of the year the Reds had become a casualty of the Super League War peace deal and were shut down. The name Reds was named after the native Red Kangaroos.
