Chris Downy
Christopher John Downy (born 29 March 1955) is a former Australian politician. He was the Liberal Party member for Sutherland in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1988 to 1997, and Minister for Sport, Recreation and Racing from 1993 to 1995. Downy was the eldest son of Gerald and Marie Downy. He was educated at Saint Patrick’s Christian Brothers College Sutherland. He attended the University of Sydney, where he received his Bachelor of Arts (Hons), and Sydney Teachers College, where he received a Diploma of Education. He was subsequently a secondary school teacher. He joined the Liberal Party in 1974 and was active in local politics. In 1980 Downy was the Liberal candidate for the safe federal Labor seat of Hughes; he was unsuccessful. Downy was elected to Sutherland Shire Council in 1983, and in 1988 was selected as the Liberal candidate for the state seat of Sutherland. Division Of Hughes
The Division of Hughes is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. History The division was created in 1955 and is named for Billy Hughes, who was Prime Minister of Australia from 1915 to 1923. Originally a marginal Labor seat, it was taken by the Liberals in their 1966 landslide. However, the Liberal margin was redistributed away in 1968 when most of its Liberal-friendly territory was shifted to newly-created Cook, and Labor won it back on a large swing. It remained in Labor hands for the next quarter-century, though it became increasingly marginal from 1984 onward. It was one of many marginal seats taken by the Liberals in the 1996 landslide. The Liberals have held it ever since – although they came close to losing it in the 2007 Labor landslide – and it is now generally considered to be a safe Liberal seat. Arthur Sinodinos
Arthur Sinodinos (born 25 February 1957) is an Australian diplomat and former Liberal Party politician who has been Ambassador to the United States since February 2020. He served as Chief of Staff to Prime Minister John Howard from 1997 to 2007 and was a Senator for New South Wales from 2011 to 2019, becoming a minister in the Abbott and Turnbull Governments. Sinodinos was born in Newcastle, New South Wales, and attended the University of Newcastle. For many years he was a public servant until becoming a political adviser. In 2007 he was appointed Chief of Staff to John Howard. After Howard's defeat at the 2007 election, Sinodinos spent time working for both Goldman Sachs and the National Australia Bank, before being appointed to fill a vacant seat in the Senate in 2011. Maurie Keane
Maurice Francis "Maurie" Keane (21 September 1923 – 12 October 2014) was an Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Woronora in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1973 to 1988. Born in Croydon Park in Sydney to Maurice and Desiree Keane, he attended Homebush High School and De La Salle College in Ashfield. After leaving school he became a proof-reader for a printing company in Sydney in 1940, before becoming a salesman in 1941. He enlisted in the AIF in 1942 and was a signalman with the 2nd Australian Corps of Signals. He returned to sales after the war's end in 1945. On 15 December 1951 he married Patricia Lucy Christmas, with whom he had three children. Lorna Stone
Lorna June Stone, (born 25 June 1938), is a former Australian politician. She was the Liberal Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Sutherland from 1997 to 1999. Stone was born Lorna Nicholson to parents Alfred and Erla. She was a drama teacher, having received her teacher's certificate from Sydney Teachers College before also attending Trinity College London. In 1974, she joined the Sylvania branch of the Liberal Party, and remained active in the party thereafter, holding various positions including campaign secretary and chairman of the local government executive. She married Keith Stone, with whom she had four children. She was also a Sutherland Shire Councillor from 1991 to 1995.
