Chris Carenza
Christopher James "Chris" or "CJ" Carenza is a retired American soccer defender who played professionally in the North American Soccer League. College Carenza, son of Hall of Famer Joe Carenza, Sr. and brother of John Carenza, graduated from St. Mary's High School in St. Louis, Missouri in 1970. He attended Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville where he played on the men's soccer team from 1971 to 1974. In 1972, he led the team in scoring and scored the winning goal in the NCAA Men's Division II Soccer Championship. He was also a 1974 Honorable Mention All American. In 2005, SIUE inducted Carenza into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame in 2004. Professional In 1975, Carenza signed with the San Antonio Thunder of the North American Soccer League. NCAA Men's Division II Soccer Championship
The NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship is the annual tournament held by the NCAA to determine the top men's Division II college soccer program in the United States. It has been played annually since 1972; prior to then, all teams competed in a single class. The most successful program has been Southern Connecticut State, with six national titles. The current champion are Franklin Pierce, who won their first national title in 2022, defeating CSU Pueblo, 2–0, in the final. Format The Division II tournament is structured around four unbalanced Super Regionals from the eight NCAA regions (Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast, and West). The SIU Edwardsville Cougars men's soccer team represents Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) in the Missouri Valley Conference of NCAA Division I soccer. The Cougars play their home matches on Bob Guelker Field at Ralph Korte Stadium located in the southwest corner of the SIUE campus in Edwardsville, Illinois. It was announced on June 2, 2017, that the Cougars' men's soccer and wrestling teams would become affiliate members of the Mid-American Conference beginning in the 2018 season. The SIU Edwardsville Cougars are the intercollegiate athletic teams of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), located in Edwardsville, Illinois, United States. The Cougars' athletic program is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) and competes at the NCAA Division I level. The SIUE mascot is Eddie the Cougar #57, and the school colors are red and white. Cougar teams have won seventeen NCAA national championships in five sports. Sports sponsored SIUE entered intercollegiate athletic competition during the 1967–68 school year.
