Chókwè District
Chókwè District is a district of Gaza Province in south-western Mozambique. Its principal town is Chokwe. The district is located in the south of the province, and borders with Mabalane District in the north, Guijá District in the east, Chibuto, Xai-Xai, and Bilene Macia Districts in the southeast, Magude District of Maputo Province in the south, and with Massingir District in the west. The area of the district is . It has a population of 187,422 (2007). It is regarded as the economic capital of Gaza Province. Chokwe District has one of the most extensive health networks in Mozambique. It is inhabited by Tsonga-shangaan speaking people. However, in the post independence period it has seen an influx of people from other ethnic groups. Chokwe, being in the Limpopo Corridor, is also home to many Zimbabwean immigrants. Chokwe, Mozambique
Chokwé, and earlier known as Vila Trigo de Morais, is a rural town and capital of Chokwe District in the province of Gaza in Mozambique. It is located about north of the capital city of Maputo. This agricultural town is noted for its tomatoes. Floods of 2000 and 2013 Despite the relative safety, in 2000 the town and its surroundings were particularly hard hit by rising flood waters from the Limpopo River. In 2013, the city "was devastated by the flooding of the Limpopo River. Most of its 70,000 residents escaped with whatever they could grab." Many evacuated to the Chiaquelane accommodation center. Tshokwe
Tshokwe (or Chokwe) is a village in Central District of Botswana. The village is located south-east of Francistown, near the border with Zimbabwe, and it has a primary school. The population was 897 according to the 2001 census. Tshokwe is north of the village of Tobane, to which it is connected by a footpath. The village is extremely poor, and was afflicted by an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, which caused the cattle to be destroyed. Although the government has provided power lines and water pipes for connection to homesteads, most of the people cannot afford the connections. The government has been attempting to assist through affirmative action, where residents of remote communities are given preference in government hiring programs.
