Chokh Film Society
''Chokh'' ( lit. The Eyes) is a 1983 Indian Bengali film directed by Utpalendu Chakrabarty, with Om Puri, Anil Chatterjee, Shyamanand Jalan and Sreela Majumdar in lead roles. The film is set in 1975 and the oppression and exploitation of Jute mill workers in Kolkata. At the 30th National Film Awards he won the awards for Best Feature Film as well as Best Direction award for the director. Plot The film is set during the Emergency period in December 1975. Jadunath a labour union leader, of Jethia Jute Mill in Kolkata has been given death sentence, for the murders of owner Jethia's brother, and another worker, even though he never committed them. Before dying, he pledges his eyes for donation. However, when the mill owner finds about this, he tries to manoeuvre the medical system to get both the eyes for his blind son. Utpalendu Chakrabarty (born 1948) is a Bengali Indian filmmaker and theater personality, based in Kolkata, India. Life and career He was born in Calcutta in 1948. Jute is a long, soft, shiny bast fiber that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. It is produced from flowering plants in the genus ''Corchorus'', which is in the mallow family Malvaceae. The primary source of the fiber is ''Corchorus olitorius'', but such fiber is considered inferior to that derived from ''Corchorus capsularis''. Madhabi Chakraborty (''née'' Mukherjee; born 10 February 1942) is an Indian actress. She won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in the Bengali film '' Dibratrir Kabya''. She has acted in some of the most critically acclaimed films in Bengali cinema and is considered one of the great actresses of Bengali cinema. The Emergency in India was a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had a state of emergency declared across the country. Officially issued by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352 of the Constitution because of prevailing "internal disturbance", the Emergency was in effect from 25 June 1975 to its withdrawal on 21 March 1977. The order bestowed upon the Prime Minister the authority to rule by decree, allowing elections to be cancelled and civil liberties to be suspended. For much of the Emergency, most of Gandhi's political opponents were imprisoned and the press was censored.
