Chloropyron
''Chloropyron'' is a genus of plants in the botanical family Orobanchaceae. The plants of this group were formerly classified in the subgenus ''Hemistegia'' of the genus ''Cordylanthus'', but were elevated to genus level by David C. Tank, John Mark Egger and Richard G. Olmstead in 2009 after molecular phylogenetic work. Taxonomy The genus ''Chloropyron'' was first described by the German-American polymath Hans Hermann Behr, an immigrant to San Francisco, in 1855. Behr was largely ignored, and the known species were classified in the genus ''Cordylanthus'', but the species now placed in the modern genus ''Chloropyron'' were classified in an unranked infrageneric group by Asa Gray in 1867, which he called ''Hemistegia''. The first species to be described was '' Chloropyron maritimum''. Thomas Nuttall first described it in the genus ''Cordylanthus'', but this was only in an unpublished manuscript, and was thus not a valid taxonomic name. ''Chloropyron palmatum'' (formerly ''Cordylanthus palmatus'') is an endangered species of salt-tolerant, flowering plant in the family Orobanchaceae. It is a low, highly branched herbaceous annual with each flower enclosed by a single, characteristically palmate bract. It is known by the common names of palmate salty bird's-beak and palmate-bract bird's-beak. ''Chloropyron maritimum'' is a rare species of flowering plant in the family Orobanchaceae known by the common names salt marsh bird's beak and Point Reyes bird's beak, depending on the specific subspecies. It was formerly classified as ''Cordylanthus maritimus''. Distribution and habitat It is native to the Southwestern United States and northern Baja California. ''Chloropyron molle'' is a species of flowering plant in the family Orobanchaceae. It is endemic to California, where it is known in coastal and inland salt marshes in the Central Valley, particularly the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. Subspecies Both subspecies are rare, one treated as a federally listed endangered species. In general this is a grayish or purplish green annual coated in long whitish hairs, sometimes bristly and glandular. The woolly inflorescence is a spike of club-shaped white flowers enclosed in densely hairy sepals. Subspecies ''Chloropyron molle'' subsp. Orobanchaceae, the broomrapes, is a family of mostly parasitic plants of the order Lamiales, with about 90 genera and more than 2000 species. Many of these genera (e.g., ''Pedicularis'', ''Rhinanthus'', ''Striga'') were formerly included in the family Scrophulariaceae ''sensu lato''. ''Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis'' (1824–1873), also known by its standard botanical abbreviation ''Prodr. (DC.)'', is a 17-volume treatise on botany initiated by Augustin Pyramus de Candolle. De Candolle intended it as a summary of all known seed plants, encompassing taxonomy, ecology, evolution and biogeography. He authored seven volumes between 1824 and 1839, but died in 1841.
