Chlorella
''Chlorella'' is a genus of about thirteen species of single-celled green algae belonging to the division Chlorophyta. The cells are spherical in shape, about 2 to 10 μm in diameter, and are without flagella. Their chloroplasts contain the green photosynthetic pigments chlorophyll-a and -b. In ideal conditions cells of ''Chlorella'' multiply rapidly, requiring only carbon dioxide, water, sunlight, and a small amount of minerals to reproduce. The name ''Chlorella'' is taken from the Greek χλώρος, ''chlōros/ khlōros'', meaning green, and the Latin diminutive suffix ''ella'', meaning small. German biochemist and cell physiologist Otto Heinrich Warburg, awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1931 for his research on cell respiration, also studied photosynthesis in ''Chlorella''. In 1961, Melvin Calvin of the University of California received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research on the pathways of carbon dioxide assimilation in plants u ...

Chlorella Vulgaris
''Chlorella vulgaris'' is a species of green microalga in the division Chlorophyta. It is mainly used as a dietary supplement or protein-rich food additive in Japan. Description ''C. vulgaris'' is a green Eukaryote, eukaryotic microalga in the genus ''Chlorella'', which has been present on earth since the Precambrian period. This unicellular alga was discovered in 1890 by Martinus Beijerinck, Martinus Willem Beijerinck as the first microalga with a well-defined nucleus. At the beginning of the 1990s, German scientists noticed the high protein content of ''C. vulgaris'' and began to consider it as a new food source. Japan is currently the largest consumer of Chlorella, both for nutritional and therapeutic purposes. Symbiosis ''Chlorella vulgaris'' occurs as a Symbiosis, symbiont in tissues of the freshwater flatworms ''Dalyellia viridis and Typhloplana viridata''. Production The world annual production of the various species of ''Chlorella'' was 2000 tonnes (dry weight) in 200 ...

Chlorella Sorokiniana
''Chlorella sorokiniana'' is a species of freshwater green microalga in the Division Chlorophyta. It has a characteristic emerald-green color and pleasant grass odor. Its cells divide rapidly to produce four new cells every 17 to 24 hours. The alga was described by Martinus W. Beijerinck in 1890. In 1951, the Rockefeller Foundation in collaboration with the Japanese Government and Hiroshi Tamiya developed the technology to grow, harvest and process ''Chlorella sorokiniana'' on a large, economically feasible scale. This microalga has also been used extensively as a model system to study enzymes involved in higher plant metabolism. Also, ''Chlorella sorokiniana'' is used to research ways to improve biofuel efficiency. ''Chlorella sorokiniana'' is often used as a food supplement A dietary supplement is a manufactured product intended to supplement one's diet by taking a pill, capsule, tablet, powder, or liquid. A supplement can provide nutrients either extracted from ...

Chlorella Pyrenoidosa
''Auxenochlorella pyrenoidosa'', formerly ''Chlorella pyrenoidosa'', is a species of the freshwater green alga in the Division Chlorophyta. It occurs worldwide. The species name ''pyrenoidosa'' refers to the presence of a prominent pyrenoid within the ''Chlorella'' chloroplast. Uses ''Auxenochlorella pyrenoidosa'' has been used medicinally as a chelatory agent, for example to extract dioxins and dioxin-like compounds from the body. Possible medicinal uses include: * fibromyalgia * hypertension * ulcerative colitis The ''pyrenoidosa'' species have been used in traditional Chinese medicine. Boraas (1983) reported a mutation in a population of Chlorella pyrenoidosa kept in his lab as a food stock for a population of flagellates. Due to a malfunction of his equipment some of the flagellates got in the Chlorella's tank. This caused a mutation from unicellular to multicellular. For early work in this area, a science project by David and John Watkins at Fairborn High School teste ...

Chlorella Autotrophica
''Chlorella autotrophica'', or ''Chlorella sp.'' (580), is a species of euryhaline, unicellular microalga in the Division Chlorophyta. It is found in brackish waters and was first isolated in 1956 by Ralph A. Lewin. The species is defined by its inability to use organic carbon as a food source, making the species an obligate autotroph. It is sometimes considered a variety of ''Chlorella vulgaris''. Uses ''C. autotrophica'' has many uses. The species has been used as a feedstock for rearing bivalves and fry in aquaculture and as source of the amino acid L-Proline. German and Russian scientists investigated the possibility of using the species as a food source for astronauts. The algal species is also a candidate feedstock for biodiesel production due to its ability to accumulate triglyceride A triglyceride (TG, triacylglycerol, TAG, or triacylglyceride) is an ester derived from glycerol and three fatty acids (from ''tri-'' and ''glyceride''). Triglycerides are the main const ...
