Magnapinna Pacifica
''Magnapinna pacifica'' is a species of bigfin squid known only from three immature specimens; two caught at a depth of less than 300 m and one from a fish stomach. ''M. pacifica'' is the type species of the genus ''Magnapinna''. It is characterised primarily by its proximal tentacles, which are wider than adjacent arms and bear numerous suckers. ''M. pacifica'' was described in 1998 by Michael Vecchione and Richard E. Young based on three specimens. The holotype is a juvenile specimen of 51 mm mantle length (ML), taken off the Californian coast at a depth of 0–200 m in a Bongo plankton net. The paratype (USNM 885787), a juvenile specimen of 49 mm ML, was found in the stomach of a lancetfish (''Alepisaurus ferox''). It had initially dried out and was later reconstituted. The third individual, a 19.1 mm ML paralarva, was taken off Hawaii Hawaii ( ; haw, Hawaii or ) is a state in the Western United States, located in the Pacific Ocean about from th ...

Grimalditeuthis
''Grimalditeuthis bonplandi'' is a squid named after the Grimaldi family, reigning house of Monaco. Prince Albert I of Monaco was an amateur teuthologist who pioneered the study of deep sea squids by collecting the 'precious regurgitations' of sperm whales. The specific name ''bonplandi'' refers to the French scientist Aimé Bonpland. The squid was observed alive in the wild for the first time in 2005 in a study. ''Grimalditeuthis bonplandi'' is a bioluminescent species. This species shows an interesting case of aggressive mimicry, with the tips of the long tentacles having the appearance of a small harmless squid. It lures fish and other squids by dangling the tips of the tentacles very far away from its body, then quickly snatching the fooled prey into its death. Intact tentacles suspected to be from this species have been found inside the longnose lancetfish. Distribution This squid has been infrequently encountered, but it is believed to exist worldwide. It lives in th ...

Mastigotragus
''Mastigotragus'' is a genus of whip-lash squid containing a single species, ''Mastigotragus pyrodes''. This species was originally placed within ''Mastigoteuthis'', but has been subsequently separated from other species in that genus due to multiple morphological characters. This genus is characterized by a lack of antitragus in the funnel-locking cartilage, larger sucker rings on the tentacles, a particular photophore morphology, and relatively large eyelid photophore. This genus is Latin for 'whip-lash goat'. The Type (biology), type specimen was collected in the North pacific off the coast of southern California at 33°32'N, 118°23'W Eastern North Pacific since then the species has been recorded in northern Hawaiian waters between latitudes 23°N-28°N. Mastigopsis
''Mastigopsis'' is a genus of whip-lash squid containing one single species, ''Mastigopsis hjorti''. Some teuthologists consider ''Idioteuthis'' synonymous with this taxon; however, genetic results indicate that this genus is not closely related with ''Idioteuthis'' but actually closer to ''Magnoteuthis''. Description ''Mastigopsis hjorti'' is similar to ''Idioteuthis cordiformis'' in that it has large fins, skin tubercles, no pocket between the bridles and the large dividing, protective membranes on the tentacular clubs but the main difference is that this species has photophores on its eyes. The suckers on the tentacular club are all of similar size, except for those nearest the tip. The funnel has a locking-apparatus which has an oval, slightly curved depression and towards the posterior its sides protrude having no cartilaginous fleshy projections. The fins are large and measure around 90% of the length of the mantle A mantle is a piece of clothing, a type of cloak. Seve ...

Whip-lash Squid
The Mastigoteuthidae, also known as whip-lash squid, are a family of small deep-sea squid. Approximately 20 known species in six genera are represented, with members found in both the mesopelagic and bathypelagic zone of most oceans. Originally described by Verill in 1881, it was later lowered by Chun (1920) to a subfamily (Mastigoteuthinae) of the Chiroteuthidae. However, Roper et al. (1969) raised it back to the family level, and this has not been changed since. The taxonomy of this family is extremely unstable, and there have been at times one genus (Young, Lindgren, & Vecchione, 2008), two genera and four subgenera(Salcedo-Vargas & Okutani, 1994), two genera and several 'groups' (Salcedo-Vargas, 1997), five genera (Braid, McBride, & Bolstad, 2014) and one species with an uncertain placement, or six genera (Young, Vecchione, & Braid, 2014). Description Mastigoteuthids range in size from quite small species in the genus '' Mastigoteuthis'', to relatively gigantic sizes in ...
