Chipping Norton is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Chipping Norton is 27 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Liverpool and is part of the Greater Western Sydney region. History Aboriginal culture There are two traditional custodians of the Chipping Norton Lake area – the Tharawal people, which inhabited the southern side of the Georges River, and the Darug people to the north and west of the River. White settlement Chipping Norton was a farming area throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, named after an old English village by William Alexander Long. Long was born in Sydney in 1839, and travelled to England to study law, and later lived in Chipping Norton (Oxfordshire). Chipping Norton Lake is managed by Liverpool City Council. The lake is an important recreational area for Liverpool, City of Canterbury-Bankstown and Fairfield City Council. History The Chipping Norton Lake area was inhabited by the Tharawal and Darug people before European settlement. The land where the lake is now situated, on the right bank of the Georges River, was granted to Thomas Rowley and George Johnston, with much of the land upstream given to Thomas Moore, an early settler and carpenter for the colony, who established farmland around the river. In the 1950s, sand mining on the point bar caused irreversible environmental destruction, and the area remained lifeless thereafter. The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. The Homestead is a heritage-listed residence at Charlton Avenue, Chipping Norton, City of Liverpool, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was built from 1884 to 1893. Chipping Norton is a market town and civil parish in the Cotswold Hills in the West Oxfordshire district of Oxfordshire, England, about south-west of Banbury and north-west of Oxford. The 2011 Census recorded the civil parish population as 5,719. It was estimated at 6,254 in 2019. History Pre-1800 The Rollright Stones, a stone circle north of Chipping Norton, reflect prehistoric habitation in the area. The town name means "market north town", with "Chipping" (from Old English ''cēping'') meaning "market".
