Chinandega Airport (Spanish: ''Pista Aérea Germán Pomares Ordoñez'') is an airport serving Chinandega, the capital of the Chinandega Department of Nicaragua. The airport is on the northwest edge of the city. The Managua VOR-DME (Ident: MGA) is located southeast of the airport. History In the early 1980s, the airstrip was used primarily by light aircraft for aerial fumigation. Chinandega
Chinandega () is a city and the departmental seat of Chinandega department in Nicaragua. It is also the administrative centre of the surrounding municipality of the same name. It is Nicaragua's 2nd most important city (economy) and 6th largest city, with a population of 114,417 (2021 estimate), and a total of 137,170 in the municipality. It is located about northwest of Managua and about southwest of El Guasaule, on the border with Honduras. Chinandega is situated about from the Pacific Ocean. In radio navigation, a VOR/DME is a radio beacon that combines a VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) with a distance-measuring equipment (DME). The VOR allows the receiver to measure its bearing to or from the beacon, while the DME provides the slant distance between the receiver and the station. Together, the two measurements allow the receiver to compute a position fix. The VOR system was first introduced in the 1930s, but didn't enter significant commercial use until the early 1950s. Road transport The road infrastructure is very well spread across the Pacific side, while the Atlantic side has less infrastructure. As of 2009, from a total of 19,137 km 2,033 km are paved and 17,104 km are unpaved. Public transport Public transport in Nicaragua is mostly served by buses on both short and wide range distances. There are five different types, based on the size of the vehicle, target group, frequency of stops and distance.
