Chinameca (volcano)
Chinameca (also known as El Pacayal) is a stratovolcano in central-eastern El Salvador. It lies north of San Miguel volcano and rises over the town of Chinameca. The volcano is topped by a wide caldera known as Laguna Seca el Pacayal, and a satellite cone on the west side, Cerro el Limbo, rises higher than the caldera rim. Fumaroles can be found on the north side, and it has been the site of a geothermal exploration program. Historical Events At Hacienda de Chinameca Pablo González, a general serving Venustiano Carranza, ordered Coronel ''Jesús Guajardo'' to assassinate Mexican Revolutionist Emiliano Zapata, on April 10, 1919. In 1700, Chinameca was a ranch owned by Felipe Cayetano Cardenas. By 1780 it was known as ''Rancho Nuevo.'' In 1899, Vicente Alonso added Rancho Nuevo to his already vast estates. By this time, the ''Hacienda of Chinameca'' consisted of 35,000 ha. The house was built by Leon Salinas in 1906 and its territory covered 64,000 ha, the largest hacienda in Morelos.
