China Girl (song)
"China Girl" is a song written by Iggy Pop and David Bowie during their years in Berlin, first appearing on Pop's debut solo album ''The Idiot'' (1977). The song became more widely known when it was re-recorded by Bowie, who released it as the second single from his most commercially successful album, '' Let's Dance'' (1983). The UK single release of Bowie's version reached No. 2 for one week on 14 June 1983, while the US release reached No. 10. Original recording Paul Trynka, the author of the David Bowie biography, ''Starman'', explains the song was inspired by Iggy Pop's infatuation with Kuelan Nguyen, a Vietnamese woman, as a metaphor for his Stooges career. As for production, the original recording that appeared on ''The Idiot'' is raw and unpolished compared to Bowie's hit remake in 1983. Nile Rodgers, the producer of David Bowie's 1983 version of the song, offered his own interpretation of the lyrics: "I figured China Girl was about doing drugs ... because China is Ch ...

American Fool
''American Fool'' is the fifth studio album by John Mellencamp, released under the stage name John Cougar in 1982. The album was his commercial breakthrough, holding the No. 1 position on the ''Billboard'' album chart for nine weeks. A remastered version of ''American Fool'' was released on Mercury/Island/UMe on March 29, 2005; it includes one bonus track, the previously unreleased title track. Production Producer Don Gehman stated in a 2011 interview that ''American Fool'' was fraught with layers of problems. "We had 20 or so songs, we had a record company that was hoping we were making a Neil Diamond‑type album, and after we spent two or three months in the studio recording these songs and mixing them to the best of our ability, I can remember an A&R guy in a pink shirt coming in to listen to them and basically thinking we had nothing. At that point, they put a stop to the project. We had ‘Jack & Diane,’ we had ‘Hand To Hold On To,’ we had ‘Weakest Moments’ — w ...

Between The Sheets (The 411 Album)
''Between the Sheets'' is the debut and only studio album by British girl group The 411. It was released by Sony Music on 22 November 2004 in the United Kingdom. ''Between the Sheets'' was supported by three successful singles, including "On My Knees (The 411 song), On My Knees" featuring Ghostface Killah, "Dumb (The 411 song), Dumb" and "Teardrops (The 411 song), Teardrops". However, upon release the album failed to match the success of its singles. It charted outside of the UK top 40 and spent just three weeks on the chart, resulting in the group being dropped by Sony. Critical reception Kitty Empire from ''The Guardian'' found that "the 411's debut album offers up a further array of songs that are either too bland or not quite right. Third single "Teardrops (The 411 song), Teardrops" pivots on the same Lalo Schifrin riff that Portishead (band), Portishead lifted, but as atmospheric as it is, it remains a secondhand idea. ''Between the Sheets'' isn't dreadful, but it sounds lik ...

China Girl (filmmaking)
In the motion picture industry, a China girl is a type of test film, an image of a woman accompanied by color bars that appears for a few frames (typically one to four) in the Film leader, reel leader. A "China Girl" was used by the lab technician for calibration purposes when processing the film (with the still photography equivalent being a "Color chart#Shirley cards, Shirley Card"). The origin of the term is a matter of some dispute but is usually accepted to be a reference to the models used to create the frames - either they were actually china (porcelain) mannequins, or the make-up worn by the live models made them appear to be mannequins. Originally the "China Girl" frames were created in-house by laboratories to varying standards, but in the mid-1970s engineers from the Eastman Kodak Company developed the Laboratory Aim Density system as a means of simplifying the production of motion picture prints. Under the LAD system, Kodak created many duplicate negatives of a single C ...
