''China, IL'' (meaning ''China, Illinois'') is an American adult animated sitcom created by Brad Neely for the Adult Swim programming block on Cartoon Network. The series was originally conceived as a web series on Adult Swim's defunct comedy website, Super Deluxe, in 2008. Neely, who had done ''I Am Baby Cakes'' and ''The Professor Brothers'' shorts for Super Deluxe in 2006, envisioned the characters in each series to coexist in the same universe. With the relationship in mind, he produced a four-part internet series entitled ''China, IL'', which was published on Super Deluxe in 2008. An 11-minute television special combining the shorts, titled "China, IL: The Funeral", aired on Adult Swim on May 25, 2008. Brad Neely
Brad Neely (born October 26, 1976) is an American comic book artist and television writer/producer known for his work on television series such as '' South Park'', ''China, IL'' and '' Brad Neely's Harg Nallin' Sclopio Peepio,'' the web series ''I Am Baby Cakes'' and ''The Professor Brothers,'' and ''Wizard People, Dear Reader''. Career ''Wizard People, Dear Reader'' Neely wrote and recorded the Harry Potter spoof ''Wizard People, Dear Reader'' in 2003. This audio track replaces the audio for the movie ''Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'', to be played along with the images but rewriting the story, such as making Harry Potter a drunkard. Neely says that the project idea came while in a bar; he and his friends were watching a man wearing headphones and guessing what he was listening to, and Neely began improvising scenes from an imaginary Harry Potter book on tape. Super Deluxe
Super Deluxe was an entertainment company owned by Turner Broadcasting. The company's main output was in online video, television series, and documentaries. History Turner Broadcasting System announced the launch of Super Deluxe, a digital comedy website, in October 2006. Super Deluxe was first launched on January 17, 2007 and featured digital shorts by comedians including Bob Odenkirk, Maria Bamford, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim. "Magical Pet" (also known as "China, IL: The Musical") is the tenth episode of the third season of ''China, IL''. The 44-minute-long episode features ten songs written and arranged by creator Brad Neely. Several producers wrote the episode, including executive producer Daniel Weidenfeld. In it, Leonard Cakes acquires Kei-ko, a talking gorilla, to appease his son's demands for a magical pet. Baby Cakes is more amused by Frank, whose body becomes entirely covered in hair after failing to read the directions of a hair growth stimulant. Frank's brother Steve competes with Pony over who is less shallow romantically. "Magical Pet" originally aired on June 14, 2015, on Adult Swim.
