Chimera (spacecraft)
''Chimera'' is a NASA mission concept to orbit and explore 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann, 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 (SW1), an active, outbursting Small Solar System body, small icy body in the outer Solar System. The concept was developed in response to the 2019 NASA call for potential missions in the Discovery program, Discovery-class, and it would have been the first spacecraft encounter with a Centaur (small Solar System body), Centaur and the first orbital exploration of a small body in the outer Solar System. The ''Chimera'' proposal was ranked in the first tier (Category 1) of submissions, but was not selected for further development for the programmatic reason of maintaining scientific balance. Centaur (small Solar System Body)
In planetary astronomy, a centaur is a small Solar System body with either a perihelion or a semi-major axis between those of the outer planets (between Jupiter and Neptune). Centaurs generally have unstable orbits because they cross or have crossed the orbits of one or more of the giant planets; almost all their orbits have dynamic lifetimes of only a few million years, but there is one known centaur, 514107 Kaʻepaokaʻawela, which may be in a stable (though retrograde) orbit. Centaurs typically exhibit the characteristics of both asteroids and comets. They are named after the mythological centaurs that were a mixture of horse and human. List Of Near-parabolic Comets
The following is a list of comets with a very high eccentricity (generally 0.99 or higher) and a period of over 1,000 years that do not quite have a high enough velocity to escape the Solar System. Often, these comets, due to their extreme semimajor axes and eccentricity, will have small orbital interactions with planets and minor planets, most often ending up with the comets fluctuating significantly in their orbital path. These comets probably come from the Oort cloud, a cloud of comets orbiting the Sun from ~10,000 to roughly 50,000 AU. Apparent magnitude () is a measure of the brightness of a star or other astronomical object observed from Earth. An object's apparent magnitude depends on its intrinsic luminosity, its distance from Earth, and any extinction of the object's light caused by interstellar dust along the line of sight to the observer. Trans-Neptunian Object
A trans-Neptunian object (TNO), also written transneptunian object, is any minor planet in the Solar System that orbits the Sun at a greater average distance than Neptune, which has a semi-major axis of 30.1 astronomical units (au). Typically, TNOs are further divided into the classical and resonant objects of the Kuiper belt, the scattered disc and detached objects with the sednoids being the most distant ones. Comet Interceptor
The ''Comet Interceptor'' is a robotic spacecraft mission led by the European Space Agency (ESA) planned for launch in 2029. ''Lucy'' is a NASA space probe on a twelve-year journey to eight different asteroids, visiting a main belt asteroid as well as seven Jupiter trojans, asteroids which share Jupiter's orbit around the Sun, orbiting either ahead of or behind the planet.
