Chime (song)
"Chime" is the first single from the British electronic group Orbital. It was originally recorded on cassette tape and allegedly cost less than £1 to produce. The track was originally released in December 1989 and was a big underground success. In 1990, it had a wider release on FFRR Records, and reached number 17 on the UK Singles Chart. The track has been referred to as the British equivalent to Derrick May's seminal classic "Strings of Life" and was included at number 11 on Mixmag magazine's ''100 Greatest Dance Singles of All Time''. Mixmag also included it on two "best ever dance" compilations, ''B!g Tunes: The Greatest Dance Singles of All Time'' (2001) and ''The Greatest Dance Tracks of All Time'' (2013). Orbital (band)
Orbital are an English electronic music duo from Otford, Kent, England, consisting of brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll. The band's name is taken from Greater London's orbital motorway, the M25, which was central to the early rave scene during the early days of acid house. Additionally, the cover art on three of their albums showcase stylised atomic orbitals. Orbital have been critically and commercially successful, known particularly for their live improvisation during shows. They were initially influenced by early electro and punk rock. Career Early years In 1989, Orbital recorded " Chime" on their father's 4 track tape deck, which they released on Oh Zone Records in December 1989 and re-released on FFRR Records a few months later. Octave One is a group of American techno musicians composed of siblings Lenny Burden and Lawrence Burden, sometimes associated with their three other brothers, Lorne Burden, Lynell Burden and Lance Burden. In 1989, The band debuted on Derrick May (musician), Derrick May's Transmat record label with the single "I Believe". Paul Woolford (DJ)
Paul Woolford (born 1976) is a British dance music producer and DJ from Leeds, Yorkshire, who also uses the aliases Bobby Peru and Special Request, such as on the underground hit, "Erotic Discourse". Biography An adoptee, Woolford grew up in Leeds with his brother Mark. Paul was inspired by the club night Back to Basics, eventually becoming a resident there. Starting in 2008, he was a weekly resident of We Love Space, which was a long-running Sunday party at Space in Ibiza. He constantly tours to play guest spots in addition to his residency and owns the record label, Intimacy. Woolford scored a hit single in 2020 with " Looking for Me", a collaboration with American DJ and producer Diplo, featuring vocals from American singer Kareen Lomax. The Shapeshifters
The Shapeshifters is the current alias of English house producer Simon Marlin and a former duo comprising Marlin and Swedish producer Max Reich, from Gothenburg. The Shapeshifters have been signed to Defected Records since 2008, and the duo were previously signed to Positiva. They are best known for their debut single "Lola's Theme", which went to No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart in July 2004. Formerly producing and touring as a duo with Max Reich, Marlin has continued working and performing under the Shapeshifters moniker as a solo act since 2017. His releases in the United States fall under the name Shape:UK, in part due to a trademark conflict with the Los Angeles-based hip hop group the Shape Shifters. The Mike Flowers Pops (also known as MFP, The Pops or The Mike Flowers Pops Orchestra) are a British easy listening band fronted by Mike Flowers (real name Michael Roberts). Joey Beltram (born 6 September 1971) is an American DJ and music producer, best known for his pioneering singles "Energy Flash" and "Mentasm" and for remixing Human Resource (band), Human Resource's "Dominator (Human Resource song), Dominator". Rave recordings "Mentasm", co-produced with Mundo Muzique and released under the artist name Second Phase in 1991, became iconic within rave party, rave culture, as it was the track that gave birth to the "mentasm riff" (also known as the "hoover sound"): a churning, dirgelike synth pattern that wormed into techno's communal genome and has since been mutated and reused in thousands of records. Ray Keith
Ray Keith is a British drum and bass DJ and record producer. He is one of the genre's most well known producers and DJs and is regarded as one of the pivotal figures in the early jungle/drum and bass scene. Biography Ray had an interest for jazz, funk and soul music which led him to buy turntables. He began DJing as a teenager in the 1980s around his native Essex and Suffolk. This was before he got his break DJing on the London acid house and rave scene. He started working as a recording artist and producer for his own style of music and other genres in 1990. One of his early remixes was a bootleg mix of Orbital's Chime in 1990, which was then officially released in 1992. He found his niche with drum and bass music. Mutations, subtitled "From L.P. C.D. M.C.", is an EP by Orbital. Selected artists picked an Orbital track, all from the 1991 Green Album, to remix. Orbital themselves contributed two remixes to this EP. The EP was released on vinyl in two parts, and as one CD or MC.
