Chimaira () is an American heavy metal band from Cleveland, Ohio. Formed in August 1998, the group was a member of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal scene. The band's name is derived from the word Chimera, a monstrous creature in Greek mythology. Throughout its history, the band had numerous line-up changes, leaving vocalist Mark Hunter as the only constant member. The band dissolved in 2014, but announced a one-off reunion in late 2017 wherein most of the group's longtime members rejoined. History Early days (1998–1999) Prior to Chimaira, vocalist Mark Hunter and bassist Jim LaMarca were part of a previous band known as Skipline, which lasted 2 years from 1996 to 1998. Emil Werstler
Emil Werstler is an American guitarist and musician based in Nashville, Tennessee who is perhaps best known for his work in metal and gypsy jazz. In 2004, Werstler became lead guitarist for the metal band Dååth, whose second album '' The Hinderers'' peaked at No. 49 on the Top Heatseekers chart in 2007. In 2009 Dååth released ''The Concealers'' on Roadrunner which reached No. 35 on Top Heatseekers and was placed as No. 3 on a list of the "top twenty metal albums of 2009" by Metal Sucks. In 2010 Werstler released the instrumental metal album ''Avalanche of Worms'' as a collaboration with Eyal Levi with the album receiving a largely positive response for its musicianship and experimental nature. Mark Hunter (born May 26, 1977) is an American musician best known as the former vocalist of heavy metal band Chimaira. Early life Hunter was born in Parma Heights, Ohio, on May 26, 1977. Career Hunter started Chimaira in 1998. The band has sold over a million albums worldwide and have debuted on the Billboard 200 Chart six times. 2013's '' Crown of Phantoms'' debuted at number 54 selling over 7,400 copies in its first week of release. Hunter was one of the main songwriters for Chimaira and considered the band leader. He is also credited in the album liner notes for assisting with guitars, artwork concepts and album production. Rob Arnold
Rob Arnold (born January 3, 1980) is an American musician, best known for performing as the lead guitarist of the metal band Chimaira and later the rhythm guitarist of the death metal band Six Feet Under. In an interview with Roadrunner Records, he named Kirk Hammett, "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman and Kerry King as being influential to his playing stylSome of his favorite bands include Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, Sepultura, and Cannibal Corpse. Arnold is endorsed by ESP Guitars and has his own signature model, the RA-600, which has an M body shape based on the ESP LTD m-1000. In Chimaira, Arnold preferred the drop-C tuning (CGCFAD). Matt DeVries
Matthew DeVries (born January 28, 1977) is the former rhythm guitarist in the heavy metal band Chimaira and the former bassist in the metal band Fear Factory. During his time with Chimaira, he, along with Rob Arnold (the lead guitarist) and Mark Hunter (the lead singer), wrote many of the band's songs. In 2005, DeVries appeared on the '' Roadrunner United: The All Star Sessions'' album, playing on two of the tracks written by Joey Jordison of Slipknot, "Annihilation by the Hands of God," and "Constitution Down". In 2003, DeVries was beaten badly in Liverpool while on tour with Chimaira. The attack was unprovoked and had nothing to do with DeVries' membership of Chimaira or Chimaira's genre of music in general. This Present Darkness (EP)
''This Present Darkness'' is the debut EP of American heavy metal band Chimaira. As of 2007, the EP has sold more than 10,000 copies, and paved the way for the group’s debut album, '' Pass Out of Existence'' which would see a release the following year. Two songs from this EP, "Painting the White to Grey" and "Sphere," were re-recorded for the album's 2001 release. Background Track 13 is entitled "Empty" (6:23), track 14 is entitled "Silence" (3:21), and track 69 is a joke song entitled "Satan's Wizard" (2:07). Tracks 6-12 and 15-68 each contain 3 seconds of silence. The hidden tracks, "Empty" and "Silence" were recorded with original bassist Andrew Ermlick. The band wanted the songs to be part of the EP, and they also wanted Ermlick to be part of the record. However, they didn't have the money to bring him in to re-record them so they used the demo versions of the tracks. The two tracks were hidden so that the CD could be sold at the price of an EP. Kevin Talley
Kevin Talley (born May 21, 1979) is an American heavy metal drummer for Sylencer and Feared. He was part of Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Six Feet Under, Nothnegal, Chimaira, Suffocation and Dååth, and toured with Battlecross in 2013. History Talley filled in on drums with The Black Dahlia Murder after their touring drummer, Pierre Langlois, was denied entry into the States by his home country of Canada. He was a session drummer on Soils of Fate's 2003 release ''Crime Syndicate''. He filled in with The Red Chord for their 2006 tour, and was also filling in with Hate Eternal for their 2006 North American tour, after Derek Roddy left the band due to personal reasons. Chimera (mythology)
The Chimera ( or ), also Chimaera (''Chimæra'') (Ancient Greek: , ''Chímaira'' means 'she-goat'), according to Greek mythology, was a monstrous fire-breathing hybrid creature, composed of different animal parts from Lycia, Asia Minor. It is usually depicted as a lion, with the head of a goat protruding from its back, and a tail that might end with a snake's head. It was an offspring of Typhon and Echidna and a sibling of monsters like Cerberus and the Lernaean Hydra.
