Chillicothe Station (Illinois)
Chillicothe was an Amtrak stop in Chillicothe, Illinois; a suburb of Peoria, Illinois, Peoria. The station was a stop on the ''Southwest Chief'' between Chicago Union Station and Union Station (Los Angeles), Los Angeles Union Station before the opening of the Cameron Connector led to the train being rerouted between Galesburg and Chicago via the BNSF Railway's Mendota Subdivision in 1996. History Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe The building used as the Amtrak station between 1971 to 1996 was the second structure in Chillicothe that the Santa Fe had used as a passenger station. The original depot was constructed in 1887 and was destroyed by fire on June 13, 1963. Operations were then transferred to the ''Santa Fe Clubhouse''. Following the creation of Amtrak, the Santa Fe shared the building as a division headquarters for freight operations until 1991. Union Station is a building in Houston, Texas, in the United States. Dedicated on March 2, 1911, and formerly a hub of rail transportation, the building now serves as a cornerstone for Minute Maid Park. The Chillicothe Subdivision or "Chillicothe Sub" (slang "Chilli Sub") is a railway line running about from Chicago, Illinois to Fort Madison, Iowa in the United States of America. It is operated by BNSF Railway as part of their Southern Transcon route from Chicago to Los Angeles. The Chillicothe Subdivision is a high volume route connecting three principal yards in Chicago ( Corwith, Willow Springs, and Logistics Park Chicago) in the east and the Marceline Subdivision in the west which continues to Kansas City. Galesburg Santa Fe Station was a railway station in the west central Illinois town of Galesburg. The station was along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway's main line and served trains such as the '' Super Chief'' and '' El Captain''. East Peoria is a city in Tazewell County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,402 at the 2010 census. The ''Prairie Marksman'' was a daily passenger train operated by Amtrak between Chicago's Union Station and East Peoria, Illinois. The route was an indirect successor to the Rock Island's ''Peoria Rocket''. History Prior to the creation of Amtrak Peoria was served by the Rock Island's ''Peoria Rocket'' out of the Rock Island's Rock Island Depot. Then in serious financial distress, the Rock Island opted out of Amtrak in 1971. The company decided it was cheaper to keep running its remaining passenger trains, the ''Peoria Rocket'' and ''Quad Cities Rocket,'' than hand them to Amtrak. The two trains continued running until December 31, 1978, each providing one daily round trip between Chicago's LaSalle Street Station and Peoria and Rock Island, respectively, via Joliet.
