Chilean Presidential Primaries, 2013
The Chilean presidential primaries of 2013 were held in Chile on Sunday 30 June 2013. It was the first such election to be run by the government under a new primary law published in December 2012. According to the law, primaries are voluntary, but its results are binding. The two main political coalitions decided to participate: Former president Michelle Bachelet won the Nueva Mayoría primary with 73% of the vote, while former senator and minister Pablo Longueira won the Alianza primary with 51%. Longueira withdrew on 17 July and was replaced by Evelyn Matthei, who had not participated in the primaries. Bachelet defeated Matthei in the runoff election held on 15 December 2013. Pablo Longueira Montes
Juan Pablo Longueira Montes (born August 12, 1958) is a Chilean right-wing politician and industrial civil engineer who served as Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism, Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism of Chile from 2011 to 2013. He was a founding member of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) being very close to Jaime Guzmán. Within the UDI he led the Paternalistic conservatism, social-conservative camp, which coexisted with Jovino Novoa's Liberal conservatism, liberal-conservative faction. The faction led by Longueira was characterised by its political work in poor sectors. During the 1980s he earned a reputation of a boots on the ground politician who aided shanty town dwellers. 2013 Chilean Presidential Election
General elections were held in Chile on 17 November 2013, including presidential, parliamentary and regional elections. Voters went to the polls to elect: * A President of the Republic to serve a four-year term. * Twenty out of 38 members of the Senate to serve an eight-year term in the National Congress. * The full 120 members of the Chamber of Deputies to serve a four-year term in the National Congress. * The full 278 members of the regional boards to serve a four-year term. All the newly elected authorities began their terms on 11 March 2014. In the presidential election, former president Michelle Bachelet fell short of the absolute majority needed for an outright win. The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, also known as UN Women, is a United Nations entity working for gender equality and the empowerment of women.
