Chilean Iron Belt
The Chilean Iron Belt is a geological province rich in iron ore deposits in northern Chile. It extends as a north-south beld along the western part of the Chilean regions of Coquimbo and Atacama, chiefly between the cities of La Serena and Taltal. The belt follows much of the Atacama Fault System and is about 600 km long and 25 km broad. Iron oxide-apatite, iron oxide copper gold ore deposits (IOCG) and manto-type copper and silver are the main types of deposits. Iron-apatite and IOCG are considered to have different origins. Manto-type deposits are concentrated in the northern part of the belt and are chiefly emplaced on rocks of La Negra Formation. The belt host also significant resources of cobalt which were deemed by 2017 to have the potential to be extracted as by-products of iron and copper mining along the belt. Iron Oxide Copper Gold Ore Deposits
Iron oxide copper gold ore deposits (IOCG) are important and highly valuable concentrations of copper, gold and uranium ores hosted within iron oxide dominant gangue assemblages which share a common genetic origin. These ore bodies range from around 10 million to >4,000 million tonnes of contained ore, and have a grade of between 0.2% and 5% copper, with gold contents ranging from 0.1 to 1.41 grams per tonne. These ore bodies tend to express as cone-like, blanket-like breccia sheets within granitic margins, or as long ribbon-like breccia or massive iron oxide deposits within faults or shears. Boquerón Chañar
Boquerón Chañar is a closed iron mine and iron ore deposit in the Chilean Iron Belt in the southern reaches of the Atacama Desert. The deposit lies near the city of Vallenar, in Atacama Region, Chile. The deposit is currently owned by Chilean state organization CORFO. It is thought to hosts reserves of 300 million metric tons of iron. Boquerón Chañar was last active in the 1960s. A plan to open the mine again, now in synergy with the neaby mine of El Algarrobo and Planta de Pellets at the coast, was shelved in 1974 by the government. The ores of Boquerón Chañar are grouped in eight orebodies with ore grades of 57% iron and 0.18% phosphorus located 250 to 1000 meters below ground. Juan Brüggen
Johannes Brüggen Messtorff better known by his hispanized name Juan Brüggen (Lübeck, Germany, April 25, 1887 – March 7, 1953, Santiago de Chile) was a German-Chilean geologist. One of his most famous works is the extensive treaty of ''Fundamentos de la geología de Chile'' published in 1950. Brüggen Glacier in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field is named after him. In 1913 he published a report on the iron ores of the Chilean Iron Belt near La Serena and Huasco and the general geology of the region. In his study Brüggen identified El Algarrobo and El Tofo as the main iron ore deposits of Chile. Tephra is fragmental material produced by a Volcano, volcanic eruption regardless of composition, fragment size, or emplacement mechanism. Chile is the world's largest producer of copper and has been so uninterruptedly since 1983. This activity provides a substantial part of the Chilean state's revenue: slightly less than 6% in 2020, with state-owned copper company Codelco alone generating 2.6% of state revenue. Iron Mining In Chile

Production has risen from 6.8 million metric tonnes in 2010 to more than 10 million metric tonnes each year beginning 2021. As of 2023 about 15% of the value of Chilean iron exports comes from iron ore pellets and the remaining from bulk ore. The northern regions of Atacama and Coquimbo hosts all iron mining in Chile. Until 2014 Antofagasta Region was also active in iron mining. In the 2014–2023 period iron ore has stood each year for 0.9 to 2.6% of the total value of Chilean exports.
