The Church of St George and the Immaculate Conception is the Roman Catholic parish church of Carimate, province of Como, Lombardy, northern Italy. History A church at the site dedicated to St George Martyr had been present since the 14th century. The church had a single nave and one chapel. It was enlarged over the next centuries, but completely rebuilt over the ruins of the earlier church in 1752 to 1755, and rededicated to San Giorgio martire and the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, whose veneration was growing by this period. The belltower was added in 1932, to replace once erected in 1891, which itself replaced the 14th-century tower that had been razed in the 1750s enlargement of the church. The interior now contains a number of canvases, including a major work of Stefano Maria Legnani, depicting ''St Joseph and the Child Jesus with attendant angels'' (1693). The Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera ("academy of fine arts of Brera"), also known as the or Brera Academy, is a state-run tertiary public academy of fine arts in Milan, Italy. Charles Borromeo ( it, Carlo Borromeo; la, Carolus Borromeus; 2 October 1538 – 3 November 1584) was the Archbishop of Milan from 1564 to 1584 and a cardinal of the Catholic Church. Giovanni Battista Crespi (23 December 1573 – 23 October 1632), called Il Cerano, was an Italian painter, sculptor, and architect. Biography He was born in Romagnano Sesia, the son of a painter, Raffaele Crespi, and moved to Cerano with his family some years later. In 1591 he is known to have been living in Milan. True to the Counter-Reformation piety zealously expressed in Milanese art of his time, his paintings focus on mysteries and mystical episodes in saintly life.
