Chien Tung-ming
Chien Tung-ming (; born 4 June 1951) is a Taiwanese Paiwan politician. Also known by the Paiwan-language name Uliw Qaljupayare, he represented the Highland Aborigine district from 2008 to 2020, alongside Kao Chin Su-mei and Kung Wen-chi. Early life and education Chien graduated from Fang Liao High School in Pingtung County before attending National Pingtung University of Education. He earned a master's degree in public administration and policy at National Chung Hsing University and taught at multiple elementary schools. Political career Chen served Shizi Township as mayor for two terms from 1990 to 1998. He was elected to the Pingtung County Council later that year and stepped down in 2007 to prepare for a legislative campaign. Shizi, Pingtung
Shizi Township is a mountain indigenous township in Pingtung County, Taiwan. It is the largest township of the county. The main population is the Paiwan people of the Taiwanese aborigines. Names The original Paiwan name for the area was Tjakuvukuvulj (Tjakuvukuvuɬ; historically rendered as ''Chaobo Obol'' or in ). Han Chinese settlers noted a rock outcropping in the shape of a lion's head () and called the village ''Sai-a-thau-sia'' (). Under Kuomintang rule, the name was changed to the current ''Shizi'', though in Taiwanese Hokkien the name ''Sai-a-thau'' is still normally used in spoken contexts. Geography The terrain of Shizi is mountainous, as the district is located near Taiwan's Central Mountain Range. Same-sex marriage in Taiwan became legal on 24 May 2019, making Taiwan the first state in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. On 24 May 2017, the Constitutional Court of the Judicial Yuan ruled that the existing law which only defined marriage as between a man and a woman was unconstitutional, and that the constitutional right to equality and freedom of marriage guarantees same-sex couples the right to marry under the Constitution of the Republic of China. The ruling (''Judicial Yuan Interpretation No. 748'') gave the Legislative Yuan two years to bring the law into compliance, after which registration of such marriages would come into force automatically. Following the ruling, progress on implementing a same-sex marriage law was slow due to strong opposition from conservative groups and government inaction. The Council of Indigenous Peoples (CIP; ), formerly known as the Council of Aboriginal Affairs, is a ministry-level body under the Executive Yuan in Taiwan (Republic of China). It was established to serve the needs of the country's indigenous populations as well as a central interface for the indigenous community with the government. The Council promotes the use and revitalization of Taiwan's indigenous languages, supported legislation that would grant autonomous land to indigenous peoples, strengthened relations between Taiwan's indigenous groups and those in other countries and raised awareness of indigenous cultures.
