Chief Of The Toronto Police Service
The chief of the Toronto Police Service is the professional head of the Toronto Police Service (TPS). Under the direction of the Toronto Police Services Board, the chief is responsible for the management and administration of the police service's operations. Myron Demkiw is the current chief of police, having assumed office on December 19, 2022. Overview Section 41 of the ''Police Services Act'' legally defines the role of police chiefs in Ontario. William Higgins (high Constable)
William Higgins was the first chief constable, high constable of the Toronto Police Service, Toronto Police Department, appointed as High Bailiff after Old Toronto, Toronto's incorporation in 1834. Higgins was appointed High Constable of the Home District in 1826, a position that included being inspector of police for York, Upper Canada at a salary of £40 a year. When the city of Old Toronto, Toronto was incorporated in 1834, the new city council unanimously appointed Higgins as High Bailiff, including the responsibility of being city inspector, with a salary of £125 a year while remaining High Constable (as well as the only constable) for the region. David Boothby
David J. Boothby (born 1944) is a retired Canadian police officer who served as the final chief of the Metro Toronto Police from 1995 to 1997, before the position was amalgamated into the Toronto Police Service. John Wesley Ackroyd (1925 – September 29, 1992) was a prominent Canadian Chief of Police and high level Ontario civil servant. He served as the chief of the Metro Toronto Police Force from 1980 to 1984. Known as an ideas man, and 'kind cop' he introduced community policing when he was the deputy chief. Though later, during his term as the chief, the biggest mass civilian arrest since the Second World War occurred in Toronto's Gay district.
