The Chief of Georgian Defense Forces ( ka, საქართველოს თავდაცვის ძალების მეთაური, tr) is a chief of defence and commander of the Defense Forces of Georgia, under the authority of the Government of Georgia. History The position was (re)introduced in accordance with the Georgian Law on Defense of 31 October 2018. It had its precursor —the Commander-in-Chief of the Army— in the Democratic Republic of Georgia from 1918 to 1921. From the 1990s until 2018 the Chief of the General Staff was the highest-ranking military officer in the Georgian military, chief military adviser to the President, and wartime commander of the Armed Forces of Georgia. The Defence Forces of Georgia ( ka, საქართველოს თავდაცვის ძალები, tr), or Georgian Defence Forces (GDF), are the combined military forces of Georgia, tasked with the defense of the nation's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. They consist of the Land Force, Air Force, National Guard, and Special Operations Forces. The Defence Forces are under overall leadership of the Minister of Defence of Georgia and directly headed by the Chief of Defence Forces. The first regular military was established in the first Georgian Republic in 1918 and was in existence until after the republic's overthrow by the invading Soviet Russian forces in 1921. Ilia Odishelidze ( ka, ილია ოდიშელიძე); russian: Илья Зурабович Одишелидзе, ''Ilya Zurabovich Odishelidze'') (25 March 1865 – c. 1924) was a Georgian military leader who had also served as a general of the Imperial Russian army.
