Chief Justice Of Guyana
The Chief Justice of Guyana is the senior judge of the High Court of the Supreme Court of Guyana and is appointed by the President of Guyana. The High Court consists of the Chief Justice as President of the Court supported by several Puisne Judges. There is a right of appeal from the Supreme Court to the Guyana Court of Appeal, which was established in 1966 and consists of the Chancellor as President of the Court assisted by the Chief Justice and several Justices of Appeal. Since 1966 the Chancellor has thus been the head of the Judiciary in Guyana. Charles Henry Major
Sir Charles Henry Major (30 October 1860 – 31 August 1933) was a British judge, who served in various colonies around the Caribbean, as well as in Fiji. Biography Born in St Kitts, Major was the son of Charles Henry Major Sr., manager of the Colonial Bank of the West Indies, and Francis Frederica Clinckett, of Barbados. He was called to the bar at the Middle Temple, and practised Law in the Leeward Islands from 1887. He was Chancellor of the Diocese of Antigua from 1889 to 1899, a member of the Legislative Council of Antigua from 1895 to 1899, and a member and President of the General Legislative Council of the Leeward Islands from 1896 to 1900. Sir Harold Brodie Smith Bollers (5 February 1915 – 26 December 2006) was a Guyana, Guyanese born lawyer, who served as Chief Justice of Guyana. Bollers was born in Georgetown, Guyana, educated at Queen College, Guyana and read law at King's College London. Sir John Verity (1892 – 9 April 1970) was a British expatriate judge who was Chief Justice of Zanzibar from 1939 until his appointment as Chief Justice of British Guiana in 1941. Sir Thomas Crossley Rayner (19 April 1860 – 22 May 1914) was a British colonial judge who became Chief Justice of British Guiana. Early life He was born the only son of Thomas Rayner, MD of Manchester, England and matriculated from Owen's College, Manchester in 1878. He entered the Inner Temple to study law, was called to the bar in 1882 and worked as a judge on the Northern circuit. Legal career He became a District Commissioner in the Gold Coast in 1887, a magistrate in Trinidad in 1891 and briefly Governor of Tobago in 1892, a Puisne Judge in the Gold Coast in 1894 and Chief Justice of Lagos in 1895.
