Flamethrower (album)
''Flamethrower'' is an album by Chicago Underground Trio which was recorded in 2000 and released on the Delmark label. Reception In his review for AllMusic, Alex Henderson states: "''Flamethrower'' is a generally enjoyable, if imperfect, avant-garde jazz date. Outside playing is dominant, and the influence of Chicago's AACM is strong throughout the CD. ... This isn't an album that one can easily absorb on the first listen, but after playing ''Flamethrower'' several times, the listener finds more and more to like about this music. Despite its imperfections, ''Flamethrower'' is worth picking up if you're an admirer of AACM-style jazz". Christopher Porter of ''JazzTimes'' wrote: "''Flamethrower'' demonstrates the Underground at its cerebral best: free-floating, quietly melodic, modal-based jazz... While his broad tone doesn't recall Miles Davis' pinched sound, Mazurek does share with the Prince of Darkness a fondness for sad melodies and electronics: Interludes using electronic to ...

Pharoah Sanders
Pharoah Sanders (born Ferrell Lee Sanders; October 13, 1940 – September 24, 2022) was an American jazz saxophonist. Known for his overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone, as well as his use of "sheets of sound", Sanders played a prominent role in the development of free jazz and spiritual jazz through his work as a member of John Coltrane's groups in the mid-1960s, and later through his solo work. He released over thirty albums as a leader and collaborated extensively with vocalist Leon Thomas and pianist Alice Coltrane, among many others. Fellow saxophonist Ornette Coleman once described him as "probably the best tenor player in the world". Sanders' take on “spiritual jazz” was rooted in his inspiration from religious concepts such as Karma and Tawhid, and his rich, meditative performance aesthetic. This style was seen as a continuation of Coltrane's work on albums such as ''A Love Supreme''. As a result, Sanders was considered to have been a di ...

Spiral Mercury
''Spiral Mercury'' is a live album by Pharoah & the Underground, featuring saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, trumpeter Rob Mazurek and drummer Chad Taylor of the Chicago Underground Duo, along with percussionist Mauricio Takara of the São Paulo Underground, bassist Matthew Lux of the Pulsar Quartet, and multi-instrumentalist Guilherme Granado. It was recorded on August 11, 2013, at the Jazz em Agosto Festival in Lisbon, and was released in 2014 by Clean Feed Records. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Fred Thomas called the album an "exceptional live document," and wrote: "The disc tends toward the more experimental and tumultuous side of things, with processed synth sounds clashing with the explosive organic instrumentation in a way that brings to mind Sun Ra's rudimentary synth experimentation on his early-'70s Saturn Records output... the group explores moody bass grooves, glitchy electronic tinkering that occasionally borders on noise, and a kind of high-energy free expression cl ...

Playground (Rob Mazurek Album)
''Playground'' is an album by Robert Mazurek Chicago Underground Orchestra which was released on the Delmark label in 1998. Reception In his review for AllMusic, Rick Watrous states: "A revelation. Cornetist Mazurek and his Chicago Underground Orchestra create some of the freshest sounds of late-'90s jazz. Mazurek and Parker's original tunes have the loose improvisatory feel of Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock's late-'60s compositions, giving soloists free reign icto strut their stuff. ... Imaginative use of instrumental colors and combinations prevail throughout the album". On All About Jazz Jack Bowers said: "This is an interesting and varied session... Mazurek has abandoned neither melody, harmony nor rhythm, and the band's hard-bop origins can also be discerned from time to time ... Throughout, Rob and the band shrewdly employ uncommon elements - the sound of a glockenspiel or bamboo flute, for example - to accentuate their singular point of view. Everyone is on the same p ...

Astral Spirits Records
Astral Spirits Records is an independent record label specializing in free jazz, improvisation, and experimental music. Based in Austin, Texas, the label was founded in 2014 by musician Nathan Cross, who started Astral Spirits as a platform for "the new wave of heavy free jazz"; as the breadth of the label's offerings expanded, imprint Astral Editions became the home for its more experimental releases. Astral Spirits has been featured in ''Bandcamp Daily'', ''All About Jazz'', the '' Chicago Reader'', '' DownBeat'', and the ''Free Jazz Collective''; ''Rolling Stone'' has called the label "crucial" and "enormously prolific"; and in 2019, ''Tiny Mix Tapes'' included Astral Spirits among their favorite labels of the decade. History In the early 2010s, Cross began to consider starting a record label or a live-recorded series as a way to stay involved in music without touring extensively. He spoke with Morgan Coy of Monofonus Press while in the early planning stages, and Coy enc ...

It was recorded on July 21, 2006, at the German Cultural Center in Chicago, and was released in 2007 by Delmark Records in both CD and DVD formats, the latter directed by Raymond Salvatore Harmon. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Michael G. Nastos wrote: "At times deadpan, often spirited, spiritual and symmetrical with plenty of ideas that work well, the group succeeds in clearly bringing its point across, and those who enjoy this type of pure improvising should find it intriguing." Seamus Seoighe of ''All About Jazz'' called the album a "sonic spiritual journey," and stated: "the Chicago Underground is constantly presenting music that is innovative, new and, without a doubt, boundary-breaking." ''AAJs Jerry D'Souza commented: "Chicago Underground has never shied away from being bold and innovative. They prove it all over again with t ...

Possible Cube
''Possible Cube'' is an album by Chicago Underground Trio which was recorded in 1999 and released on the Delmark label. Reception In his review for AllMusic, Michael G. Nastos states: "the trio weaves in and out of improvisations and written passages quite effectively and holds a certain degree of interest if one pays close attention. ... This second recording from the Trio shows no lack of imagination or resolve, though the pure musical content might leave some creative music listeners wanting for the third, hopefully breakthrough effort that must come from these talented, challenged sonic explorers". Adam Shatz of ''The New York Times'' wrote: "This graceful collage of free jazz and art rock has refreshingly little in common with the electric jazz of Miles Davis, whose ghost tends to hover over such experiments. Instead of looking to funk for inspiration, the trio delves into the ethereal textures of modern electronica. And the astonishing thing is that the record doesn't sou ...
