Chicago Maritime Festival
The Chicago Maritime Festival is a maritime music and culture festival held in Chicago, Illinois, every winter, usually the last weekend in February, usually at the Chicago History Museum. It is not uncommon for over 500 people to participate. It has existed in its present incarnation since 2003 and is the only wintertime festival featuring maritime music in the United States. The main organizers are performers Tom & Chris Kastle. There was no festival in 2021. Bounding Main
Bounding Main is an American a cappella quintet focusing on traditional sea shanties and maritime music. Formed in 2003, Bounding Main performs maritime music, presenting an "Elizabethan sea dog" look in their costumes and gear as well as informal looks that represents them as a contemporary vocal group. They perform traditional sea shanties and nautical ballads from as far back as 400 years ago, as well as new maritime music, and original compositions. Bounding Main attempts to introduce historical music and structure in a way that appeals to listeners who might otherwise consider it "old-fashioned" through the use of harmony-focused arrangements agreeable to the modern ear and attention span. The group has won awards for their performances at renaissance festivals, and they have taken several international tours, bringing their music to popular shanty festivals in locations such as Germany, Netherlands, Poland, France, England, and Canada. Cindy Kallet is an American folk singer-songwriter from New England. She currently performs solo, with Grey Larsen, and as part of the trio of Kallet, Epstein & Cicone. Her first album, ''Working on Wings To Fly'' (1981), had songs about Martha's Vineyard and New England. That album was also voted as one of the top 100 folk albums of the century by WUMB. Kallet studied biology at Bennington. Many of her songs feature imagery of wildlife. and Kallet has performed on NPR shows such as '' A Prairie Home Companion'' and ''All Things Considered''. John Roberts (musician)
John Roberts (born May 5, 1944) is an English musician residing in Schenectady, New York. He is best known for his musical collaborations with Tony Barrand. As Roberts and Barrand, they performed ''a cappella'' and accompanied performances of traditional English folk music. They also performed and recorded fare such as sea shanties of the North Atlantic, and an album of traditional drinking songs. The duo was also half of the related act '' Nowell Sing We Clear''—which in addition to a number of albums—performs an annual yuletide concert series. Born in England, Roberts moved to the United States to study graduate level psychology at Cornell University, where he formed his longtime music partnership with Tony Barrand in 1968. He is the song leader for the Revels music programs in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He also presents music enrichment programs for schools throughout New England. Dan Milner is a singer of traditional Irish songs, a scholar-teacher and a writer. Born Daniel Michael Milner on March 27, 1945 in Birmingham, England to an Irish mother, Nora Mary Cremin of Brosna, County Kerry, and an Irish-English father, Willam Milner, he is the younger brother of Liam Donal Padraig Milner (1940-2008), who was also a fine singer. Salty Walt & the Rattlin' Ratlines is a sea shanty performing group based in San Francisco, originally formed in 2003. The group consists of Walter "Salty Walt" Askew, Daniel Briggs, Griff Nelson, and Jon Richardson. Debra Cowan is a singer based in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Biography Debra Cowan had worked as middle school maths teacher, until, in 1997, she decided to quit and pursue her desire to sing. John Townley
John Townley (born 1945) is a musician, astrologer, and naval historian who was a member of the folk-rock group The Magicians and founder of New York City's Apostolic Recording Studio. Townley performs and releases maritime music, and is a professional astrologer who has published eight books on the subject. Biography Early life and education Townley's parents, who were former owners of Beekman Place Bookshop in Manhattan, lived in Rancho Santa Fe, California when Townley was just beginning school.
