Chicago Film Society
The Chicago Film Society (CFS) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving celluloid film and celluloid film culture. Widely known for historically informed screenings of 35mm, 70mm, 16mm and 8mm films, the CFS also maintains a film archive and has collaborated on many film restorations. Influence The Chicago Film Society plays an acknowledged role in Chicago's cultural life, with screenings frequently featured in prominent lists of highly recommended upcoming events. Michael Phillips (born March 11, 1961) is an American film critic for the ''Chicago Tribune'' newspaper. Early life Phillips was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and spent most of his early years in Racine. Career Prior to being film critic for the ''Chicago Tribune'', Phillips was the drama critic of the ''Tribune''; the ''Los Angeles Times''; the '' St. Paul Pioneer Press''; ''The San Diego Union-Tribune''; and the ''Dallas Times Herald''. China Girl (filmmaking)
In the motion picture industry, a China girl is a type of test film, an image of a woman accompanied by color bars that appears for a few frames (typically one to four) in the Film leader, reel leader. A "China Girl" was used by the lab technician for calibration purposes when processing the film (with the still photography equivalent being a "Color chart#Shirley cards, Shirley Card"). The origin of the term is a matter of some dispute but is usually accepted to be a reference to the models used to create the frames - either they were actually china (porcelain) mannequins, or the make-up worn by the live models made them appear to be mannequins. Home Movie Day
Home Movie Day (established 2002) is an annual event that celebrates amateur films and filmmaking. It is a worldwide event, held at local venues all over the world and organized locally by volunteers. Home Movie Day events provide the opportunity for individuals and families to have their films inspected and to see and share their own home movies with an audience of their community. The event is an opportunity to discover the personal, historical, and social importance of home movies and for individuals to learn how to best care for them. From 2003 to 2007, Home Movie Day was usually held on the second Saturday of August. The first Home Movie Day was held August 16, 2003 (8/16), a play on the respective film gauges. Chicago Film Archives
Chicago Film Archives (CFA) is a regional moving image archive located in Chicago, Illinois. CFA is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization dedicated to identifying, collecting, preserving and providing access to films that reflect Chicago and the Midwest region of the United States. Since its founding in late 2003, the archive has expanded to include over 160 film collections, which combined contain nearly 30,000 films and elements. CFA safeguards its moving image collections through stabilization, digitization, and climate-controlled-storage. Chicago History Museum is the museum of the Chicago Historical Society (CHS). The CHS was founded in 1856 to study and interpret Chicago's history. The museum has been located in Lincoln Park since the 1930s at 1601 North Clark Street at the intersection of North Avenue in the Old Town Triangle neighborhood. National Film Preservation Foundation
The National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF) is an independent, nonprofit organization created by the U.S. Congress to help save America's film heritage. Growing from a national planning effort led by the Library of Congress, the NFPF began operations in 1997.
