Chicago Aldermanic Black Caucus
The Chicago Aldermanic Black Caucus is a bloc of Alderman, aldermen in the Chicago City Council, designed with the goal of "representing the needs and interests of Chicago's Black communities." During the 2019–23 term, the caucus consists of 20 members, out of the council's 50 aldermen. Membership Current members As of January 2020, the Caucus has 20 members. Past members Activity in City Council 2019–23 term In October 2019, the Black Caucus delayed a vote on a proposed ordinance authorizing legal cannabis dispensaries, expressing concerns that the ordinance would allow medical dispensaries to sell marijuana recreationally without a zoning change and that it did not have sufficient ownership requirements to enable minority business ownership. Jason Ervin
Jason C. Ervin is the current alderman for Chicago’s 28th Ward. The 28th Ward is located on the West Side of Chicago. Education and early career Ervin has a Bachelor of Arts from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and a Master of Public Administration from Governors State University. Prior to his appointment to the Chicago City Council, he was the village manager of Maywood, Illinois. He also is a graduate of Morgan Park Academy. Jeanette Taylor
Jeanette Beatrice Taylor (born May 16, 1975) is an American politician and community organizer. Taylor is the alderman of Chicago, Illinois' 20th ward, taking office as a member of the Chicago City Council in May 2019. She won an open race to succeed outgoing alderman Willie Cochran in the 2019 Chicago aldermanic elections. She is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Early life and career Taylor was born in Chicago on May 15, 1975. Her parents were a clerk at Chicago Public Schools and a taxi driver. For high school, Taylor attended Dunbar Vocational High School. 2019 Chicago Aldermanic Election
The 2019 Chicago aldermanic election took place in two rounds on February 26 and April 2, 2019, to elect 50 aldermen to the Chicago City Council. Each alderman represents one of Chicago's 50 wards. The elections are non-partisan and use a two-round system where the top two finishers compete in a second-round run-off if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the first round. The elections were party of the 2019 Chicago elections, which included elections for Mayor, City Clerk, City Treasurer. Of the 50 incumbent aldermen 45 ran for re-election. Incumbents did not run in the 20th, 22nd, 25th, 39th, and 47th wards. Five aldermen ran unopposed: Brian Hopkins (2nd ward), Scott Waguespack (32nd), Gilbert Villegas (36th), Brendan Reilly (42nd), and Nicholas Sposato (38th). Toni Foulkes
Toni Foulkes is the former alderman of Chicago's 16th ward, and was formerly the alderman for the 15th ward. She is African American. Aldermanic career In 2007, Foulkes was elected Chicago alderman for the 15th Ward, winning an open-race to succeed outgoing alderman Theodore Thomas. She was reelected in 2011. She was redistricted to the 16th Ward, where she won election in 2015. The race saw her running against incumbent 16th Ward alderman JoAnn Thompson, in addition to several other contenders. However, Thompson died two weeks before the initial round of voting in the election. Ultimately, the election saw her win a runoff election against Stephanie Coleman. Maria Hadden
Maria Elaine Hadden is an American politician and community activist from Chicago. She is a member of the Chicago city council, serving as alderman for the city's 49th ward. She won election to that office after defeating 28-year incumbent Joe Moore in the 2019 aldermanic elections. The 49th ward includes most of Rogers Park and portions of West Ridge. While Hadden is affiliated with the Democratic Party, she has said she would be an independent alderman. She is a member of the Progressive Caucus, Black Caucus, and LGBT Caucus in the city council. Matt Martin (Chicago Politician)
Matt Martin (born March 5, 1984) is a Chicago politician and the alderman of the city's 47th ward. He won election as alderman in 2019 and took office as a member of the Chicago City Council in May 2019. The 47th ward includes all or parts of North Center, Lincoln Square, Lakeview, and Uptown. Emma Mitts
Emma Mitts (born June 12, 1955) is alderman of the 37th ward on Chicago's West Side. The predominantly African-American ward includes portions of Austin, West Garfield Park and West Humboldt Park. She has represented the ward since 2000. Early life Mitts was born June 12, 1955, in Elaine, Arkansas. Carrie Austin
Carrie Austin is alderman of the 34th ward on Chicago's far south side. The predominantly African-American ward includes portions of Morgan Park, Roseland, Washington Heights and West Pullman. Howard Beamon Brookins Jr. (born October 21, 1963) is the Alderman of the 21st Ward of the City of Chicago. He was elected in 2003 and is currently serving his fifth term.
