Zulva (play)
Uttam Tupe (28 December 1932 – 26 April 2020) was a writer and poet from Pune, India. He wrote several hundred short stories and 16 novels. One of his books was made into a successful play, and another into a feature film. Tupe also wrote about the social ills of the caste system and issues with Devadasi. Early life Tupe wrote a series of novels with a Devadasi theme that were released into the Marathi literary scene in the 1980s. Tupe began writing in the rustic dialect of his native Satara district. He crafted a short story on the evils of the dowry system. It was immediately published, and a few months later, Tupe got Rs 501 as a cash prize from the Marathi Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad. Devadasi
In India, a devadasi was a female artist who was dedicated to the worship and service of a deity or a temple for the rest of her life. The dedication took place in a ceremony that was somewhat similar to a marriage ceremony. In addition to taking care of the temple and performing rituals, these women also learned and practiced classical Indian artistic traditions such as Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi, and Odissi. Their social status was high as dance and music were an essential part of temple worship. Between the sixth and thirteenth centuries, Devadasis had a high rank and dignity in society and were exceptionally affluent as they were seen as the protectors of the arts. During this period royal patrons provided them with gifts of land, property, and jewellery. After becoming Devadasis, the women would spend their time learning religious rites, rituals, and dances. Waman Kendre
Waman Kendre is an Indian theatre director and academician. He has previously served as the Director of National School of Drama, (NSD) New Delhi from August 2013 to September 2018. He is married to Actress Gauri Kendre and also has a son Early years He is the son of a farmer from Daradwadi village in Beed district of the Indian state of Maharashtra. After his school and college, he completed a one-year proficiency certification course in Dramatics from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad and then was selected for a three-year course in the NSD. Career At NSD, he earned a fellowship to research on ritualistic and folk theatre of Kerala. He remained active in theatre activities in Mumbai for many years.
