Chesterton, Cambridge
Chesterton is a suburb in the northeast corner of Cambridge, England, north of Cambridge station, on the north bank of the River Cam. History It is also the name of two electoral wards (West Chesterton and East Chesterton) in the city. The total population of both wards at the 2011 Census was 18,134. These are roughly the same as the area normally called Chesterton: specifically the land north of the River Cam, east of Castle Hill and south of the Arbury and King's Hedges estates. City councillors for the area are Councillors Gerri Bird, Baiju Thittala and Carla McQueen. As county council divisions are different from city council wards, part is covered by Cllr Ian Manning and part by Cllr Elisa Meschini. A large housing association estate makes up part of the East Chesterton area. Chesterton Railway Station
Chesterton railway station was located on the line between and . It opened in 1850 and closed the same year. History In 1846, the Eastern Counties Railway (ECR) obtained authorisation to construct the Wisbech, St Ives and Cambridge Junction Railway. The section from St Ives to Chesterton Junction on the King's Lynn to Cambridge line opened on 17 August 1847. The line was originally double-track but was singled by 1854 before being redoubled in the 1870s. The ECR opened a "flag station" at Chesterton Junction on 19 January 1850. It remained open until October 1850. It was situated on the north side of Fen Road just before the main line crossed the River Cam. A signal box controlling the junction and level crossing over Fen Road stood at the northern end of the bridge until November 1984. Chesterton (UK Parliament Constituency)
Chesterton is a former United Kingdom Parliamentary constituency. It was created upon the splitting up of the three member Cambridgeshire constituency into three single member divisions in 1885. The seat was abolished in 1918 when Cambridgeshire was recreated as a single-member constituency. Boundaries The Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 split the former three-member Cambridgeshire parliamentary county into three single-member divisions. One of these was the Western or Chesterton Division, and the other two were Newmarket and Wisbech. The seat was named after the town of Chesterton, the only urban area in the constituency, and a suburb of the university town of Cambridge. Air Transport Auxiliary
The Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) was a British civilian organisation set up at the start of the Second World War with headquarters at White Waltham Airfield in Berkshire. The ATA ferried new, repaired and damaged military aircraft between factories, assembly plants, transatlantic delivery points, maintenance units (MUs), scrapyards, and active service squadrons and airfields, but not to naval aircraft carriers. It also flew service personnel on urgent duty from one place to another and performed some air ambulance work. Notably, around 10% of its pilots were women, and from 1943 they received equal pay to their male colleagues, a first for the British government. Veronica Volkersz
Veronica May Volkersz ( Innes; 1917–2000) was a British aviator and beauty queen. She flew for the Royal Air Force, RAF's Air Transport Auxiliary in the Second World War and was the first British woman to fly an operational jet fighter when she ferried a Gloster Meteor, Meteor from the Gloster Aircraft Company, Gloster factory to RAF Moreton Valence on 15 September 1945. Early life Veronica May Innes was born in Chesterton, Cambridge, on 17 April 1917. Her father was G. V. d'A. Innes – a professional soldier who rose to the rank of Major. Leo Reid
Leonard John Reid (14 January 1888 – 25 October 1938) was an English first-class cricketer. Reid was born at Chesterton in January 1888. He was educated at Aldenham School, before going up to Christ's College, Cambridge. He made his debut in minor counties cricket for Cambridgeshire in the 1906 Minor Counties Championship. He played minor counties for Cambridgeshire until 1914, making fifty appearances in the Minor Counties Championship. Having not played first-class cricket while at Cambridge, Reid later made a single first-class appearance for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) ''against'' Cambridge University at Lord's in 1913. Horace Gray (cricketer)
Horace Gray (29 November 1874 – 21 January 1938) was an English people, English first-class cricketer, educator and clergyman. The son of William Wythers Gray, he was born in the Cambridge suburb of Chesterton, Cambridge, Chesterton. He was educated in Cambridge at The Perse School, before going up to Jesus College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge, he made his debut in first-class cricket for Cambridge University Cricket Club, Cambridge University against A. J. Webbe, A. J. Webbe's XI at Fenner's in 1894. Chesterton Tower
Chesterton Tower is a Grade I listed medieval tower located in Chapel Street, Chesterton, Cambridge. The two-storey 14th-century tower is the former residence of Italian procurators of the abbot of Vercelli in Italy. It stands in the former vicarage garden of nearby St Andrew's Church, Chesterton. Built from field stones, clunch, brick and ashlar quoins, the tower is, unusually, not a fragment but a complete dwelling with vaulted ceilings, a spiral staircase and garderobe. The lower storey is vaulted in two bays with chamfered ribs and carved bosses. A restoration was completed in 1949. In 1217 as an expression of gratitude for his assistance in preventing civil war, the Chesterton church was given by Henry III to the Papal Legate Cardinal Guala. Cambridge North Railway Station
Cambridge North railway station is a railway station located in the Cambridge suburb of Chesterton, close to Cambridge Science Park. The station is on the Fen Line, which runs from Cambridge to King's Lynn. It connects to the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, and provides an interchange with Park & Ride and local bus services.
