Chesley Bonestell
Chesley Knight Bonestell Jr. (January 1, 1888 – June 11, 1986) was an American painter, designer and illustrator. His paintings inspired the American space program, and they have been (and remain) influential in science fiction art and illustration. A pioneering creator of astronomical art, along with the French astronomer-artist Lucien Rudaux, Bonestell has been dubbed the "Father of Modern Space art". Life and career Early years Bonestell was born in San Francisco, California. His first astronomical painting was done in 1905. After seeing Saturn through the telescope at San Jose's Lick Observatory, he rushed home to paint what he had seen. The painting was destroyed in the fire that followed the 1906 earthquake. Chesley Arthur "Ches" Crosbie (November 4, 1905 – December 26, 1962) was a Newfoundland businessman and politician. Early life Crosbie belonged to a prominent St. John's family involved in hotels, fish exporting, insurance, shipping and manufacturing. He was the son of Mitchie Anne (Manuel) and Sir John Chalker Crosbie, the founder of Crosbie and Company Limited. Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger III (born January 23, 1951) is a retired American fighter pilot, diplomat, and airline pilot best known for his heroism as captain of US Airways Flight 1549 that he ditched in the Hudson River in 2009 after both engines were disabled by a bird strike. All 155 people aboard survived. Sullenberger became an outspoken advocate for aviation safety and has helped develop new protocols for airline safety. Chesley Goseyun Wilson (July 31, 1932 – October 4, 2021) was a maker and performer of the Apache fiddle, singer, dancer, medicine man, silversmith, former model, and actor. Wilson received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1989. Early life Chesley Goseyun Wilson was born on July 31, 1932, in the town of Bylas on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona. His father, Nichol Wilson, was a medicine man and a rancher. Albert Cornell Chesley (born August 23, 1957) is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 11th round of the 1979 NFL Draft. He played college football at Pittsburgh. Chesley is listed as the starting linebacker on the National Champion 1976 Pitt Panther squad. Chesley was the Eagles starting inside linebacker in 1981, making 16 starts and recording two interceptions to go along with two fumble recoveries. John Alexander Chesley (1837 – December 28, 1922) was a Canadian politician. Born in Portland, New Brunswick, the son of William A. Chesley and Mary Ann Algee, Chesley received his education at the schools of St. John and at the Albert County Grammar School. He then worked on a farm for a time, after which he learned the engineering and machinist business. He subsequently engaged in business for himself and was the proprietor of an extensive foundry. In 1881, he was appointed census commissioner for the Saint John County and was also one of the Dominion Liquor License Commissioners. Paul Chesley is an American photojournalist born in Red Wing, Minnesota who is best known for his work as a photographer for the National Geographic Society. Career Paul Chesley was introduced to the art of photography by his father at the age of three when he was given his first camera. He grew up taking pictures on family vacations and developing film in his dad's darkroom. Chesley's early work focused on natural subjects and landscapes and in the early 1970s he began taking photography classes at Colorado Mountain College as well as participating in workshops at the Center of the Eye in Aspen, Colorado. Robert Chesley (March 22, 1943, Jersey City, New Jersey – December 5, 1990, San Francisco, California) was a playwright, theater critic and musical composer. Biography Chesley earned his B.A. in music from Reed College in 1965. Between 1965 and 1975 he composed the music to over five dozen songs and choral works, chiefly to texts by poets such as Emily Dickinson, Willa Cather, James Agee, Walter de la Mare, Gertrude Stein and Walt Whitman. His instrumental works include the score to a 1972 film by Erich Kollmar.
