Chertanovo (russian: Чертаново) is a housing area in the Southern Administrative Okrug of Moscow, Russia. The name derives from Chertanovo village first mentioned in 1665. The territory became part of Moscow in 1960. The area is 21,3 km2 and has a population of 364,693 ( census of 2010). There are three administrative districts of Moscow (raions), five metro stations, three railway stations, 25 streets and five parks. History There are 10 groups of burial mounds of Vyatichi and one of the medieval Slavic tribes, dated 12 - 13th century. There are many version of origin of the name Chertanovo. According to Vladimir Toporov, the name of Chertanovo village derives from name Chertanovka river and its name derives from medieval Finno-Ugric languages. Southern Administrative Okrug
Southern Administrative Okrug, or Yuzhny Administrative Okrug (russian: link=no, Южный административный округ, ), is one of the twelve high-level territorial divisions (administrative okrugs) of the federal city of Moscow, Russia.Law #13-47 As of the 2010 Census, its population was 1,716,808, up from 1,593,065 recorded during the 2002 Census. The federal city of Moscow, Russia is divided into administrative districts called okrugs, which are a subdivision of state administration. The administrative okrugs are further divided into municipal formations called districts (''raions'') and settlements (''poseleniy''), which are local self-government entities. Vyatichi
The Vyatichs or more properly Vyatichi or Viatichi (russian: вя́тичи) were a native tribe of Early East Slavs who inhabited regions around the Oka, Moskva and Don rivers. The Vyatichi had for a long time no princes, but the social structure was characterized by democracy and self-government. Like various other Slavic tribes, the Vyatichi people built kurgans on territory which belongs now to the modern Russian state. The 12th-century ''Primary Chronicle'' recorded that the Vyatichi, Radimichs and Severians "had the same customs", all lived violent lifestyles, "burned their dead and preserved the ashes in urns set upon posts beside the highways", and they did not enter monogamous marriages but practiced polygamy, specifically polygyny, instead.
