Cherry Township is a township in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 860 at the 2010 census. State Highway 37 ( MN 37) serves as a main route in the township. Other routes include Saint Louis County Roads 25 and 92. The unincorporated community of Cherry is located within Cherry Township. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of ; is land and , or 1.70%, is water. The West Two River flows through the eastern portion of Cherry Township. Kinney is a city in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 169 at the time of the 2010 census. History Kinney gets its name from Hon. O. D. Kinney, who was one of the original European owners of the Merritt site in 1892 along with Judge J.T. Hale, and Capt. Joseph Sellwood. Zim is an unincorporated place in McDavitt Township, St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. Geography The community is located 14 miles southwest of the city of Eveleth at the junction of Saint Louis County Highway 7 and County Road 27. The Saint Louis River is nearby. History A post office called Zim was established in 1899, and remained in operation until 1990. The community derives its name from a logging camp run by a lumberman named Zimmerman who worked in the area. Arts and culture The nearby Sax–Zim Bog area is home to one of the world's best birdwatching places and the site of the annual Sax–Zim Winter Birding Festival held in February. McDavitt Township, St
McDevitt is an Irish surname, originating in County Donegal in the northwest part of Ireland. This family name is a member of the ancient Northern O’Néill group of clans who resided in the Ulster province of Ireland. This surname developed as a side-branch of the larger O'Doherty family, who were the historic chiefs of the Inishowen peninsula in northern County Donegal. The McDevitt family name arose with the 1208 death of Davitt O’Doherty, a lesser chieftain within the O'Doherty family. Thus, McDevitt = son of Davitt. Later in Donegal, and working with the O'Doherty clan, the family was involved in several of the Irish Wars of the late 1500s.
