Helen Chenevix
Helen Sophia Chenevix (13 November 1886 – 4 March 1963) was an Irish suffragist and trade unionist. In 1911, she worked with Louie Bennett to form the Irish Women's Suffrage Federation. The two later founded the Irish Women Workers' Union. Chenevix was also elected to Dublin Corporation, and twice served as acting Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1942 and 1950. In 1951, she served as President of the Irish Trades Union Congress, and from 1955 to 1957 she was Secretary of the Women Workers' Union. She was also active in the International League for Peace and Freedom and the Irish Pacifist Movement. Early life Helen Sophia Chenevix was born on 13 November 1886 in Blackrock, Co. Richard Chenevix (bishop)
Richard Chenevix (1698 – 11 September 1779) was Bishop of Waterford and Lismore. He was the grandfather of Melesina Trench and was responsible for her upbringing after she was orphaned, until his death. Family Chenevix was the son of Major Philip Chenevix of the guards, and grandson of Reverend Philip Chenevix. Philip Chenevix had been the Protestant pastor of Limay, had settled in England after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes as his brother had been murdered because of his religion. He had a daughter Phillipa Melosina who married Henry Alcock, who became M.P. for Waterford. She died giving birth to a son, 14 May 1765. He also had a son Philip Chenevix, who married Mary Elizabeth Gervais, and they had a single child, Melesina, in 1768. Both Philip and Mary died before Melesina's fourth birthday, and she was sent to live with her grandfather. He looked after her until his death when she was eleven. Richard Chenevix (chemist)
Richard Chenevix (ca. 1774 – 5 April 1830) was an Irish chemist, mineralogist and playwright who also wrote on a range of other topics. He was known for his sharp cynicism and for engaging in combative criticism. Early life and family He was born in Ballycommon, Co. Offaly, to Elizabeth Arabin and lieutenant-colonel Daniel Chenevix of the Royal Irish Artillery. His 3x great grandfather, Reverend Philip Chevenix, was a Huguenot settler who left France after Louis XIV's Edict of Fontainebleau revoked the earlier Edict of Nantes which had given additional rights to Protestants. His great uncle Richard, and namesake, was the Church of Ireland Bishop of Waterford and Lismore. His sister, Sarah Elizabeth, married Captain Hugh Tuite of Sonna, Co. Melesina Trench
Melesina Trench (''née'' Chenevix, previously St George; 22 March 176827 May 1827) was an Irish writer, poet and diarist. Anthony Chenevix-Trench
Anthony Chenevix-Trench (10 May 1919 – 21 June 1979) was a British schoolteacher and classics scholar. He was born in British India, educated at Shrewsbury School and Christ Church, Oxford, and served in the Second World War as an artillery officer with British Indian units in Malaya. Captured by the Japanese in Singapore, he was forced to work on the Burma Railway. He taught classics at Shrewsbury, where he became a housemaster, and taught for another year at Christ Church. He was headmaster of Bradfield College, where he raised academic standards and instituted a substantial programme of new building works. Appointed headmaster of Eton College in 1963, he broadened the curriculum immensely and introduced a greater focus on achieving strong examination results, but was asked to leave in 1969 after disagreements with housemasters and an unpopular attitude to caning, which became the subject of a press controversy after his death. Cesca Chenevix Trench
Cesca Chenevix Trench (3 February 1891 – 30 October 1918) was a British-born Irish nationalist and illustrator. She took the Irish name Sadhbh Trinseach. Biography Francesca Georgina Chenevix Trench was born in the vicarage of St John the Baptist Church, Tuebrook, Liverpool. She was the granddaughter of Richard Chenevix Trench, the Archbishop of Dublin. She grew up in a vicarage in Kent. Her mother was a Unionist. Cesca became an Irish nationalist. Her uncle, classicist Henry Butcher, was a Unionist MP for Cambridge; they drew apart after 1910 when he did not support the move to make Irish compulsory in the new National University. Trench studied at a boarding school in Malvern from 1906 to 1908, where she began to support Irish Home Rule in public. Charles Chenevix Trench
Charles Pocklington Chenevix Trench (29 June 1914 - 26 November 2003) was a British Indian army officer, popular historian and writer. Life He was born in Simla, India as the only son of Sir Richard Chenevix Trench, a member of the Indian Political Service. Sir Richard was grandson of Richard Chenevix Trench (1807–1886), Archbishop of Dublin. Charles was a cousin of Anthony Chenevix-Trench, later headmaster of Eton College. After studying at Winchester College and Magdalen College, Oxford, Charles received a regular Indian Army commission in 1934, joined Hodson's Horse in 1936 and became a fluent Pashto speaker. During the final weeks of 1st Army's advance into Tunisia in 1943 he was attached to the 12th Lancers. Francis Chenevix Trench
Francis Chenevix Trench (1805–1886) was an English divine and author. Francis, born in 1805, was the eldest son of Richard Trench (1774–1860), barrister-at-law, by his wife Melesina Trench, Richard Chenevix Trench was his younger brother. Francis entered Harrow School early in 1818, and matriculated from Oriel College, Oxford, on 12 November 1824, graduating B.A. in 1834 and M.A. in 1859. On 4 June 1829 he entered Lincoln's Inn with the intention of studying law, but in 1834 he was ordained deacon and became curate of St. Giles, Reading. In the following year he was ordained priest, and on 13 September 1837 he was appointed perpetual curate of St. John's, Reading. In 1857 he was instituted to the rectory of Islip, Oxfordshire, which he held till 1875, when he retired from active work. He died in London on 3 April 1886. Georgia Chenevix-Trench
Georgia Chenevix-Trench (born 8 February 1959) is an Australian cancer researcher who investigates genetic predispositions to cancer. Chenevix-Trench was born in Nairobi, Kenya.''Who's Who Australian Women'' (2017), ConnectWeb. She received her undergraduate degree (BSc(Hons)) in 1980 from the Department of Genetics at Trinity College in Ireland and was subsequently awarded her PhD in 1985 from the Department of Human Genetics at the Medical College of Virginia, USA. and in 1986 she commenced her post-doctoral work there. In 1989 she moved to Australia where she started working as a research officer at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR).
