''Cheluvi'' () is a 1992 Kannada film directed by Girish Karnad. The film stars Girish Karnad and Sonali Kulkarni in her film debut. This film won the National Film Award for Best Film on Environment Conservation/Preservation. This film is based on the tale of A Flowering Tree: A Woman's Tale. Although the film was shot in Kannada, it contains Hindi songs. The film was released with English subtitles and was dubbed in Hindi upon release. The film was later included in the 24th International Film Festival in Delhi. Plot Two sisters sell blossoms to the villagers who wonder where the flowers came from. One of the sisters, Cheluvi, is told by the other sister to reveal the secret and in turn she turns into a half human half tree being. Girish Karnad
Girish Karnad (19 May 1938 – 10 June 2019) was an Indian actor, film director, Kannada writer, playwright and a Jnanpith awardee, who predominantly worked in South Indian cinema and Bollywood. His rise as a playwright in the 1960s marked the coming of age of modern Indian playwriting in Kannada, just as Badal Sarkar did in Bengali, Vijay Tendulkar in Marathi, and Mohan Rakesh in Hindi. He was a recipient of the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India. For four decades Karnad composed plays, often using history and mythology to tackle contemporary issues. He translated his plays into English and received acclaim. His plays have been translated into some Indian languages and directed by directors like Ebrahim Alkazi, B. V. Sonali Kulkarni
Sonali Kulkarni (born 3 November 1974) is an Indian actress, producer, and writer who primarily appears in Marathi and Hindi films. She has also appeared in Kannada, Tamil, Gujarati and English films. She has worked in over 70 films, both commercial and experimental, as well as some international projects, and is regarded as one of the most versatile Marathi actresses. Kulkarni has won a National Film Award, two Maharashtra State Film Awards, and four Filmfare Marathi Awards, and has been nominated for one Filmfare Award, two IIFA Awards, and one Screen Award. Rajiv Menon (born 20 April 1963) is an Indian filmmaker who has worked as a film director, director and cinematographer in several Indian regional film industries. After making his breakthrough as a film cinematographer with Mani Ratnam's drama ''Bombay (film), Bombay'' (1994), Menon has continued to collaborate with Ratnam on other projects including ''Guru (2007 film), Guru'' (2007) and ''Kadal (2013 film), Kadal'' (2013). Bhaskar Chandavarkar
Bhaskar Chandavarkar (16 March 1936 – 26 July 2009) was an Indian sitar player, academic and film and theatre composer who worked with well-known directors of Indian cinema like Mrinal Sen, Girish Karnad, Aparna Sen, K. G. George and Amol Palekar in various languages including Marathi, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali and Oriya and was known for his blending of Indian classical and western music. Suresh Urs is an Indian film editor who works predominantly in the South Indian cinema. He has edited over 700 films and 40 documentaries and television shows. The National Film Award for Best Film on Environment Conservation/Preservation is one of the categories in the National Film Awards presented annually by the Directorate of Film Festivals, the organisation set up by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in India. It is one of several awards presented for feature films and awarded with Rajat Kamal (Silver Lotus). The National Film Awards were established in 1954 to "encourage production of the films of a high aesthetic and technical standard and educational and culture value" and also planned to included awards for regional films.
