Aharon Chelouche
Aharon Chelouche ( he, אהרן שלוש / Arabic: هارون ثلاثة) (born 19 May 1840 in Oran, Algeria – 7 April 1920, British-occupied Palestine) was an Algerian Sephardic Jew, landowner, jeweler and moneychanger. During the end of the 19th century, he was a major figure in Jaffa's Jewish community. He also known as the founder of Neve Tzedek neighborhood, now part of Tel Aviv, Israel. Early life Sometime in 1840 his parents travelled by ferry to Haifa. Soon afterwards the family moved to Nablus, then to Jerusalem, and thereafter finally to Jaffa. They became soon one of the leading families in the city, having exceptional good leadership skills. The Chelouche family had good connections with Arab families, as they spoke Arabic. Moshe Chelouche
Moshe "Musa" Chelouche ( he, משה שלוש, ''Moshe Shlush'', April 7, 1892 – February 26, 1968) was a Jewish politician and businessman in Mandatory Palestine and Israel who served in 1936 for 10 days as the Mayor of Tel Aviv. Biography Chelouche was born in Jaffa in the Ottoman Empire, and was educated in Ottoman Palestine, Marseille, and Beirut. His father was Yosef Eliyahu Chelouche, a businessman and founder of Tel Aviv. his father's father was a rabbi, and this mother's father had been the representative of Hovevei Zion. Both his parents were of Moroccan descent. During World War I, Chelouche helped Jewish Immigrants to Palestine receive Ottoman Citizenship, and helped Zionist Activists escape the area to avoid Ottoman Persecution. He was captured by the Ottomans in 1915 and imprisoned in Damascus for a year. In 1928, Chelouche was elected to the Tel Aviv City Council. He was re-elected in 1935. Yosef Eliyahu Chelouche (, he, יוסף אליהו שלוש, 1870 – 23 July 1934) was one of the founders of Tel Aviv, an entrepreneur, businessman, and industrialist. Early life Yosef Eliyahu Chelouche was born in Jaffa, Ottoman Syria. His father, Aharon Chelouche, one of the prominent figures of the local Maghrebi Jewish community, was a goldsmith, money changer and land dealer. He was educated in a Jewish Talmud Torah and in the Tifereth Israel Jewish school in Beirut. His marriage at the age of 17 had put an end to his formal education, and he turned to the field of trade. During the early 1890s he opened in Jaffa, together with his elder brother Avraham Haim Chelouche, a store for building materials under the name of Chelouche Frères.
