Kryoneri, Olympia
Kryoneri ( el, Κρυονέρι, before 1928: Μπάστα - ''Basta'') is a little village near Olympia, Elis, Greece. It is situated on the southwestern edge of the Foloi oak forest. It is 2 km south of Neraida, 4 km west of Doukas, 3 km east of Chelidoni and 9 km northeast of Olympia. Its population in 2011 was 139. Population History The old name for Kryoneri, ''Basta'' (still used in the region), is Italian. The Venetians planted olives, and built the partially finished Venetian castle in Kionia. The Black Death (1347–1350), along with malaria, devastated much of Elis' population. All inhabitants of the villages Basta, Kaloletsi (now Neraida) and Milies had died. After the plague 10,000 Orthodox Christian Albanians settled in the area, invited by Despot of the Morea Manuel Kantakouzenos. Dafnoula ( el, Δαφνούλα, meaning little laurel) is a community and a mountain village in Elis in Greece. It is part of the municipal unit Andritsaina. It is located in the hills on the left bank of the river Alfeios, about north of the town Andritsaina. The Alfeios forms the border with Arcadia to the north and east, the nearest village across the river is Agios Ioannis. The community Dafnoula includes the small village Chelidoni (pop: 6). 2007 Greek Forest Fires
The 2007 Greek forest fires were a series of massive forest fires that broke out in several areas across Greece throughout the summer of 2007. The most destructive and lethal infernos broke out on 23 August, expanded rapidly and raged out of control until 27 August, until they were finally put out in early September. The fires mainly affected western and southern Peloponnese as well as southern Euboea. The death toll in August alone stood at 67 people. In total 84 people lost their lives because of the fires, including several fire fighters. Some of these firestorms are believed to be the result of arson while others were merely the result of negligence. Hot temperatures, including three consecutive heat waves of over 40 °C (105 °F), and severe drought rendered the 2007 summer unprecedented in modern Greek history. Foloi Oak Forest
The Folóï oak forest ( el, Δρυοδάσος Φολόης) is an oak forest in southwestern Greece. It is located in the municipal unit Foloi, Elis, in the western part of the Peloponnese peninsula. The Folóï oak forest is situated at an altitude of 688m, on the plateau of the Folóï mountain. It is an ecosystem unique in the Balkan peninsula and consists of a territory of , which is almost entirely covered by deciduous oaks that form a dense forest area. Mythology The Pholóē oak forest was known to Ancient Greeks, because of its proximity to many of their settlements in the Elis region.
