''Cheirocerus'' is a genus of long-whiskered catfishes native to South America. Species There are currently three recognized species in this genus: * ''Cheirocerus abuelo'' (Leonard Peter Schultz, Schultz, 1944) * ''Cheirocerus eques'' Carl H. Eigenmann, Eigenmann, 1917 * ''Cheirocerus goeldii'' (Franz Steindachner, Steindachner, 1908) Distribution and habitat ''Cheirocerus'' is distributed throughout much of the Amazon River basin, and appear to be absent from the Orinoco River. ''C. abuelo'' occurs in the Lake Maracaibo basin, ''C. eques'' in the Amazon River basin, and ''C. goeldii'' in the Purus River basin. ''C. goeldii'' is more typical of lowland large rivers where the water may be warmer and deeper, though it may also occur far upstream. ''C. eques'' appears to occur closer to Andes, Andean foothills where rivers may be cooler and shallower. ''Cheirocerus abuelo'', is a species of demersal catfish of the family Pimelodidae that is native to Lago Maracaibo basin of northwestern Venezuela. It grows to a length of 20.0 cm. It inhabits fresh water rivers in Río de los Pajaros, río Agua Caliente, río Negro, río Apón, río Socuy and Lago Maracaibo. It is clearly distinguished from other species with 30-33 gill rakers. Currently, it contains about 30 genera and about 90 recognized and known but unnamed species. Wikipedia lists 109 species in this family. The low-eye catfish (previously family Hypophthalmidae), and thus the genus '' Hypophthalmus'', which contains four species, was reclassified with the pimelodids. This family previously included fish that are now classified under Pseudopimelodidae (previously subfamily Pseudopimelodinae) and Heptapteridae (previously subfamily Rhamdiinae).
