''Chauffeur Antoinette'' is a 1932 German comedy film directed by Herbert Selpin and starring Charlotte Ander, Hans Adalbert Schlettow and Walter Steinbeck. It was shot at the Johannisthal Studios in Berlin. The film's sets were designed by the art director Erich Czerwonski. A British remake ''The Love Contract'' was produced the same yearWright p.45 and a French version ''Antoinette'' was also released. Synopsis Antoinette, a wealthy young widow, runs into financial difficulties after investing in the stock markets and is forced to sell her villa and car. By chance one day she encounters William P. Harrison, the speculator responsible for her losses who is now the owner of her house. After she helps fix his car, he offers her a bet. If she can work as his chauffeur for three months without any problems he will restore her lost fortune to her. Herbert Selpin
Herbert Selpin (29 May 1904 – 1 August 1942) was a German film director and screenwriter of light entertainment during the 1930s and 1940s. He is best known for his final film, the partly suppressed ''Titanic (1943 film), Titanic'', during the production of which he was arrested by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. He was later found dead in his prison cell. Life and career Herbert Selpin was born on 29 May 1904 in Berlin. After his medical studies in the same city, Selpin worked as a dancer, boxer, librarian, and art seller before he obtained, in the mid-1920s, an internship at the prestigious Universum Film AG, UFA film studios. Among other assignments at UFA, he worked on the set of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's ''Faust (1926 film), Faust'' (1926). Ludwig Stössel
Ludwig Stössel (12 February 1883 – 29 January 1973) was an actor born in Lockenhaus, now Austria, then Hungary. He was one of many Jewish actors and actresses who were forced to flee Germany when the Nazis came to power in 1933. Biography Stössel began performing on the stage in Austria and Germany when he was only 17. He soon became a successful character actor and performed on the most prestigious stages in Germany, among them the Max Reinhardt, the stage and the in Berlin. Stössel later became a movie actor. Chauffeur
A chauffeur is a person employed to drive a passenger motor vehicle, especially a luxury vehicle such as a large sedan or limousine. Originally, such drivers were often personal employees of the vehicle owner, but this has changed to specialist chauffeur service companies or individual drivers that provide both driver and vehicle for hire. Some service companies merely provide the driver. History The term ''chauffeur'' comes from the French term for stoker because the earliest automobiles, like their railroad and sea vessel counterparts, were steam-powered and required the driver to stoke the engine. Early petrol/gasoline-powered motor cars, before the advent of electric ignition, were ignited by 'hot tubes' in the cylinder head which had to be pre-heated before the engine would start.
